My friend wants to buy a 95 Land Rover Discovery with a 6.2 Liter GM diesel taken out of a military surplus humvee from the early 90's. He doesn't know enough about diesels and cars in general to take care of this disco himself. I've tried to explain this to him for over a week. Do you all have any thoughts that would help me to convince him not to buy it?

so someone took one of the slowest non turbo diesels and stuck in one of the top unreliable rigs.......sounds like a good plan :laughing:

Actually was a moderately popular swap for Rover stuff back in the mid-late 90's. I have several Land Rover Enthusiast / Land Rover Owner magazines with an ad for a company that sold the conversions.

I understand Isabella Clarke's point of view - but it isnt really that bad. Might not be a swap I would make today, noting the much greater availability of engines like the TGV 2.8 (would be a direct bolt in for a rover, since it is based on the old 300TDI engines) or the Cummins 3.9 - but if the buyer is comfortable with the power level and noise level of the 6.2 powered Disco - It would be pretty cheap to run and maintain for as long as the body and frame last.

"top unreliable rigs" ?? I guess if cruise control or power windows breaking is too much to handle, then consider a Toyota instead or something.

i wonder if that is the same one that has been flaoting around for sale here and there?
There was one for sale in Maryland this past year that sounds like this.

and add, big, heavy, underpowered to the engine and if you turn the power up on it, you are guaranteed to break disco driveline parts..

all bad all the way around, plenty more options out there unless he just wants it for the mall, wouldnt take it on a trial for sure..

What's so bad about these engines? They put out comparable power as old untuned 350's. It seems to me like a good diesel swap candidate considering cummins 4 cylinders are expensive, 300tdi's are virtually nonexistent and on617s are underpowered

At the risk of being called a liar - I drove my 1985 Chevy C20 (6.2 Diesel J-code / SM465 / 3.73's / LT235-85-16's) across Iowa last weekend. Drove to Macomb, Illinois. Picked up a wagoneer body and dragged it home.

882 mile round trip, 37.5 gallons of fuel, averages out to 23 mpg.

I keep it at 60 mph max. (@2300 rpm)

At the risk of being called a liar - I drove my 1985 Chevy C20 (6.2 Diesel J-code / SM465 / 3.73's / LT235-85-16's) across Iowa last weekend. Drove to Macomb, Illinois. Picked up a wagoneer body and dragged it home.

What's so bad about these engines?
Compared to the Ford and Dodge offerings, the GM diesels were underpowered and for the available power the engine was pretty heavy. But they got decent mileage - which is what they were designed for. Add in that they have the same bolt pattern and relative configuration as the GM gassers and you have an easy swap. For those reasons they are a fairly common swap into Toyotas, Nissans, and others down in Australia.
