I recently bought a complete 97 mountaineer with the 5.0 to do a motor swap into a jeep Cherokee. I need to keep it obd II to keep it legal so I am planning on using the stock wiring cut down and the ecm. My question is do I need the ecm custom programmed to stand alone, or will it work as is? Some of my research has shown me that it has pats and some that have it doesn't. The vehicle is 2 hours away and I have the ecm with me.

Any help would be appreciated, I am heading out west for a couple of months on Wednesday and want to get it to someone to program if it needs it before I leave so it ready when I get back.

I guess I forgot to mention in the first post, but I am also looking for recommendations on who to send it to for programming if it can be, or very easy to use tuner or software I can use myself.

You shouldn't need a custom tune to make it run, as long as you keep the rear O2 sensors and the 4R70W auto trans. If you keep the auto, it needs a speed input, but luckily the 97 reads it off the transfercase output and doesn't go through the ABS computer. The later ones read it off the ABS tone ring on the rear axle and is processed first through the ABS computer then sent to the ECM and speedo.

A 97 shouldn't have PATS, it came out in 98 on the explorer/mountaineers. Quick way to tell is by the key...is it a standard flat/skinny one or a big bulbous one? The big ones have the little PATS chip inside.

You chose a good year to use for a swap; though not as sophisticated as the later trucks, the 97 is a bit simpler and easlier to swap into a different chassis.

There is some really good info and knowledgable folks on an explorer forum and they would be happy to help you find the info you need when it come to wiring diagrams and tuner recommendations.

Are you going to swap the axle into your Jeep as well?

That is good news, thank you! I have a set of Toyota fzj80 axles to swap under the Cherokee, so I am hoping to sell the 8.8 off to recoup some money. This mountaineer fell into my lap at a very reasonable price and I love the 5.0 in Jeeps because I can reuse my radiator, fuel pump, fuel lines, etc... To help cut down on the swap costs. I had one in a 97 wrangler years ago and had a blast with it.

My buddy has a 97 Mountaineer that he got custom tunes for (I built it with a stock 5.0 Mustang cam, GT40P heads, FMS headers, full dual exhaust minus the rear cats, and a transgo shift kit) and used a SCT to load them. He is quite pleased with it; I can ask him who he worked with if you'd like.

I am planning on dropping in a B303 cam and headers of some sort (need to see what fits when the motor is installed) and would like to eliminate the rear cats, but the priority will be to get it in and get it running before I start doing to much to it.

I would stay away from the alphabet cams as there are better choices available.

You will have to do some research on cams and what works with the explorer ECMs...they all seem to react differently from what I read. You could have two different trucks with the same calibration code and same camshaft; one will run great, they other won't, so it's kind of a gamble. The stock Mustang cam is very good for a truck and if you wanted to go slightly bigger, use 1.7 roller rockers to increase the lift. I've assembled two with the stock Mustang cams and they both reacted well.

Hopefully you have an early 97 motor with the non-P heads so your header options will be more open.
