Anyone know what gears were standard when you have a 97, newstyle F150 Extra Cab 4x4 4.6 and the 17wheel option. My dad wants to lower his truck with smaller wheels and tires. Any recomendations on size. It is an auto.

I was debating last night... maybe his dad's really old, or disabled or something that would make it easier on him to have a lower vehicle? Maybe someone has some knowledge or something that could help the guy out.
Or maybe I'm just too soft & FearMe will wander in & rule some ass. :flipoff2:

Lower means easier for dear ole dad

Yep he is nearing 60, with a disability and in his younger years could jump over his 4x4 and kick all your butts. Now even with a step is starting to have a harder time. I think I could get an inch or so out of the wheels and tire to help him keep the fullsize.

So, seriously, and the wheel tire combination he has now could be for sale soon, he has the offroad package, with the largest size of 97. Was that the 17 or the 18 inch. Anyone know what gear was standard and the gear with that standard and then the tire size and gear for the big wheel offroad package. It is an auto and 4.6 new body. He lives in PA I am in CO and going home to help him out here so am looking for some knowledge.

Thanks

Hmmm.. uncrank the torsion bars and put a shorter block (or no block) in the rear and leave the wheels and tires alone?

Would the front end just end up too loose? Never dealt with torsion bars before.

I wouldn't wanna change the tires enough to lower the truck, it's just gunna end up lookin hideous..

Gearing in that is probably 3.55 or 3.73, more than likely 3.55 though. (very common)

Or just try and find a better step bar..

To start off, with IF you uncrank the Torsion bars it will be almost too lose, but it is possible. The fenders probably sit on the tires now, At most it will lower it around 1.5"- 2" So Find a tire thats about that much smaller if you want to go that much lower.
The smallest wheel you can put on there is a 16.5
Gearing in my 97 5.4L is 3.55. Thats the most common i have seen. I have heard of the 3.73's coming in a 4.6. Just read the tag on it and find out. most likely it will have the trac lock so the number will read 3L55 or 3L73 on the lower left side of the tag.

p.s.- The big wheels in 97 were 17"

When my ol' man was looking at F-150's in 00' and again in 03'

I noticed that pretty much all off road packages F-150's had 3.55's,(and an open diff, strangely enough) Most v-6 trucks had 3.73's, and the ones with the towing packages had 3.31's, for some god awful reason.. More than likely it has 3.55's in it.

And lowering the torsion bars, and removing the rear blocks should lower it down just fine.
