I don't think that I want the payments for a PSD yet so has anyone towed with a 98 or newer Chevy 1500 4x4 w/ rear disks. I can put overload springs to bump up the rating. I tow my FJ40 w/1 tons and 42's on a trailer w/ rear axle trailer brakes. My old tow rig is a 1994 Chevy Z71. It towed alright but dropped the rear pretty bad. Any suggestions? Just tryin to save money

The tow haul button will be nice. Does that button just let the tranny wait to shift. How does the tranny in the 1500's hold up? The 2500 is probably affordable, alot cheaper than a PSD. Any opinions I can use them.

Ryno -- The tow/haul button keeps the convertor from locking up in overdrive, and does shift at higher rpms. My only catch is I have to remember to press in the button after stopping for gas!

Not sure how much $$$ you are looking at... but you can find some deals on the 2001 & 2002 2500HD for around $20K (gas 2wd).

Nice thing about a Crew Cab... ton of interior room, long wheel base for towing. Sucks getting into small parking places, but rest of the time makes towing a pleasure on the road.

I seem to remember the rockwells weigh in around 1000 pounds each. Did I hear that correctly? Just thinking your FJ40 could be around 6500 pounds, add a trailer.... You really need at least a 3/4 ton to tow that!

Actually I meant Dana 60's front and rear. I really want a 4x4. How is the 99" 6.0 liter K2500's. Does anyone tow with that. I think that I am pushing my luck with a 1500. How does the 6.0liter compare to the 98& older 5.7's? Anything to look out for with this combination? Are both tranny choices O.K. with this package? I want ext. cab and don't want to spend over 18k.

FWIW, my buddy just bought a '99 F-350 short box crew cab 4x4 XLT w/106k on it for $21k, from a used truck dealer.

Was that a deisel? Are the 5.4 Triton engines underpowered for the 250's? I will probably only tow twice a month.

I have a 2002 2500HD with the 6.0 & I personally think it's very comparable to the '96-'98 Vortec 350. Buddy of mine has that engine in his truck, & he says mine tows better. At the very least, it's "as good" if not "better than" the 350. I had a '90 GMC with the TBI 350, and this 6.0 makes that engine look downright sluggish. Hills that used to pull me down to 45 MPH in 2nd gear with the old truck drop me to about 65 in the new one, at which point it downshifts to 3rd & accelerates the rest of the way up. You might notice a drop in power in the 2500 compared to the 2500HD mainly due to the restrictive exhaust they use on the 2500 (look under both of 'em at a dealer & you'll see what I mean). Replace that restrictive pipe & the 6.0 will run better. BTW, the "1500HD" trucks are essentially the same running gear as the "2500" trucks. The 2500HD gets a bigger rearend (10.5" FF vs. 9.5" SF) & the thicker frame, but the same engine, tranny, & front diffy.

You should be able to find a 2500 X-cab 4x4 in your price range if you look at '99-00's. I saw a pretty nice one listed for $19,500 at a local dealer not long back with about 65,000 miles on it.
