For everyone's information

The California Wilderness Coalition has just released a report calling for wilderness designations for 7.4 million acres of land in that state including:

1. A 5,841 acre addition to Granite Chief Wilderness

2. A 30,613 acre addition to the Desolation Wilderness

3. A new 31,107 acre wilderness around Meiss Meadow

4. A new 48,410 acre wilderness around Freel Peak

This is a total of of more than 180 square miles to be carved out of the Tahoe Basin, Tahoe N.F., El Dorado N.F. and the Toiyabe N.F. We can assume that places like Spyder and Barrett Lakes and Rubicon Springs will be on the hit list. The remaining 11,380 square miles is spread throughout the rest of the state.

The CWC is also planning an full scale legal assault on private property owners with holdings within the above listed areas. It is their intention to completely encircle Tahoe with restricted public lands.

I'll provide a link to the maps later this afternoon

Same shit is happening up here.

They set up what they call the "Don Getty Wilderness Park" which basically means no access to any motorized vehicle,

They've already closed a couple of trails and more are coming.

This was announced at our last clean up in Waiparous on Sept 15/01.

Nice. 200 of us spent the day cleaning and repairing the trails. A government representative shows up to give a speech and thank us and... by the way we're closing the trails you just cleaned..

It seems like we're also heading for a battle.

This is an overview map of what these people want to take from us.

This part of their site is aimed directly at the heart of all off-roaders

This is a map of the state of CA showing existing and potential wilderness designations. If you have a steam powered modem be prepared to wait 'cause the file is about 450k.

While I lived in Utah they did the same shat with the escalante/grandstaircase area, 2.8 million acres. You talk about piss'n off the locals.......but it's still wilderness area now and off limits to anyone who can't hike into the area. Hope Bush will repeal this and others like the arizona strip land grab.
