Ijust found an 87 x-cab turbo for $700. It's so cheap becuase the engine is only partially installed. It has the automatic tranny.

I currently own an 84 standard cab. My project idea is to swap the x-cab onto my 84 frame and use the 22rte engine as well. I know some people here have done this x-cab swap and my question is will I have problems due the differences in the auto tranny and my 5-speed. I plan to use the 5-speed and t-case from the 84. Any opinions about the 22rte? Any ideas or input?

by the way i/m a newbie so flame away!!
and thanks

I disagree... they do have some unique parts, but share most with the regular 22R. If taken care of it can be an excellent engine. With a few upgrades it will produce a good deal of reliable power.

I like the idea of the turbo also. Been lusting over the LC turbo kit lately. A good link for possible modifications of the 22ret is www.well.com/user/mosk/

Just got home from buying the truck. Only paid $550! I got the truck with what appears to be a complete 22re installed except for the exhaust. Also he gave me the complete 22rte that he removed from the truck, which he says was knocking badly. Looks like he thought the 22re would work with all the externals from the RTE, and gave up when he ran into problems.

Even if my project ideas don't materialize, I can use the steering box for a cross over set up on my 84, and part out the rest of the truck.

Thanks again for any input about the rte engine, cab swap, etc.
