Who's running them? Is their anything better? Definately getting longfields up front, but I can't find much about the rear.

I'm running Polyperformance now. Ran junkers all season. Broke one. I read in the other thread that you're trying to do a budget build. Uprgraded rear axle shafts are definitely on the 'Wish' list... not the 'Need' list.

That being said... the AP axles have a great reputation.

Marlin is selling Alloys with a 10 year warranty.

I agree, if you are on a budget, you might think of spending your money elsewhere first.

x3. What size tires and what xfer/axle gears are you planning? Lockers? If you want to run a rear spool, they are a need...you will break stockers that way even with 31s...eventually. That would help to know...if they are wish list or thneed!
I'll be running 5.29s and detroits front and rear, plan right now is upgraded front for now and diamond next summer, but rear I am undecided on. From all the research I have done, the toyota rear housings are pretty strong, a lot stronger than the front anyways. So I can get by with stock rear shafts for now? It was a tossup between upgraded rear shafts or the 4.7 tcase kit from trailgear.
Id say go for the 4.7:1 kit and just carry a spare axle shaft. ive been wheeling all this year with the tcase gears and rear spool with stock axles and havent had any problems at all.
my thinking was the rear shafts I'll probably need before the tcase gears I will, but who knows. this may turn into a non budget built haha
4.7s in the dual case... much better money spent than upgraded rear shafts.

I have 38.5 sx's on the ftoy and only broke 1 rear shaft last summer, after wheeling 2 weeks at the hammers and moab then wheeling locally, finally broke when a tire got wedged in an undercut climbing a waterfall. That shaft came out of my old truck, which had been wheel'd hard for a few years so it was wll used and abused.

4.7s, but no dual case. This guy has no knowledge on how to go about that undertaking yet, that will come later.
no dual case in a toyota? in that case your better off with a dual case adpater and a second case than any of the above choices.

refer to above post, I have no idea how to install or operate a dual case setup, althought it is wanted, just not yet. If you want to come from canada to west virginia to help me install the dual cases and then teach me how to use it, I would be more than happy to provide the adapter, 2nd case, pizza and beer, but otherwise, duals aren't an option at this point.

I have enough knowledge to install parts I buy, do some fabricating if needs be, like welding spring hangers and such, but when it comes to the mechanics of how dual transfer cases work and what not I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA. My dad was never into this kind of stuff and I never had anyone to teach me so I'm learning as I go, could someone explain this to me?
In my opinion you do not need the rear shafts, it took me years to break a rear axle, and I do wheel it.

In my opinion I would get a dual case adapter from Marlin or Inchworm. What is there to learn to drive it, you find a gear the best suits your need and use it, with out 4:70's in the rear case for rockcrawling you will be using Lo-Lo a lot. My choices for gears would be Marlin then Inchworm but that is just my personel preference.
Read the write up on Marlins site about installing dual case. It actually is very easy to do and they have pictures:flipoff2:

What tires are ya running?

GEARS are more important!

Yes, better to have dual cases with stock gears than a single with 4.7s (not low enough and no choice of ratios)!

What part of the hills do you live? I have some brothers in those parts... (Webster County)
If you are completely and utterly unable to install or even understand how to use :)shaking: ) dual cases, how the hell are you going to install 4.7 gears? Or were you planning on buying a pre-assembled unit?

you can buy the dual case adpater from marlin all setup too or even a full daul case setup with a second case with the 4.7 gears installed.

In using a dual case its no different than shifting from hi range to low range...just have the choice of going in double low by having both cases in low.

It is very easy to setup...just take your time pulling it apart and look at the instructions... its a decent project to learn on.

I live in Harrison County, about half an hour south of WVU

It's not that I'm incapable of installing or understanding dual cases, I have just never had a bit of contact with them. Now that Pook has explained it to me, I understand it completely, as far as installing, I can take anything apart and put it back together with instructions. Now my next question. Marlin sells "crawl box", it already comes with 4.7 gearing if you choose. So I just purchase either one of those or another case and install 4.7 gears, get an adapter and slap it on the back of my existing case and fab up some sort of skidplate/crossmember, right? Have my driveshaft shortened and go play?
