Any strength difference between 79-83 4speed vs. 5 speed tranny?

Just curious if there is any big diff. between these two. Is either one more desired for rockcrawling? Thanks, Johnny

i'm not sure but i think it would be worth the swap. more gears and a better high way gear. i haven't ever heard anything bad about the 5 speeds so they must be fine. i don't think they break very often, i have 137,000 miles on it, its an 85.

just my $.02 though

The L43 is a piece of CRAP!!! I destroyed mine with my hybrid.. It barely had even 67,000 miles on it. When it let go it knocked every tooth off 2nd and when I took the trans appart there was only one good gear left in it- I ended up throwing the whole trans away........

Do not get a 5 spd. trans made fom Aug. 82 to Nov. 82. They have a smaller input shaft bearing (75mm vs. 80mm) and will self destruct with little notice. <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> Toyota replaced alot of them back then but not all. So if you look at an older one make sure you don't get one of these.

Supposedly the pre-85 5spds have a smaller/weaker front input bearing.
If you're gonna do a swap, get a W56 from a 85-later EFI truck, or a R151 from a Turbo equipped truck............

Just be aware the W56 shifts the tcase from the top of the tacse, NOT the tranny housing...

If you have the original tranny look under the hood and find the plaque that says 22r and the look at the bottom for the

trans/axle and you should find one of the #s that starts with L--

The main difference between the 4 and 5 speed is ( the original question ) the rear tail housing and the 5 gear/overdrive cluster, the front part of the trannys are the same but the 5speed tranny has a space for the 5 gear gears, under the alum. housing (rear part). the trannys are both the same leghth and can be beefed up, marlin crawler can build you one that will hold up well (the heavy duty version) i also beleave that marlin runs this same tranny just my $.o2???

Cliff .. the 85 5spd will bolt up just like the 84 4 spd without having to change the position of the crossmember? There is so much conflicting information....

The 5 spds were crap (most of them, it was the luck of the draw if you got a good one).

They suffered bearing failures big time. I went thru 3 in my '83, and the SOB's at Toyota wouldn't admit there was a design problem and cover it. Five other friends had '82 and '83 Toys, 2 had the same problem.
However, none of us ever managed to break one offroading. The tranny problems were a reason I did the 231 V6/TH350 swap.

Hey, don't forget that the transfer case from the 4 speed has an extra set of splines on the input shaft and I dont think it will mount to the five speed.
