Well, here my story. I am really unhappy with my teralow making more noise then a mexican street fair. So Im thinking about going for the atlas. I know alot of people recommend the 3.8 for the auto. I didnt find the tera to be the bad behind the auto. Will the added torque of the .2 be that much worse. The brakes didnt seem to bad but it was awful low. Which I was loving. Thanks. Or flip a D300 and put in a 4:1 kit and do the same thing for less.

it's recommended for the auto to go with the 3.8....but i'm getting one from Randy's for my TJ and i'm going with the deeper choice (but I have a history of making bad Jeep related choices )I couldn't find any good reason not to go with more gear, and it's not THAT much differance!

umm...nevermind

The 4.3, I have heard, has a tendency to power through the brakes when used with an auto. That is why the 3.8 is recommended.

No, please tell. What is wrong with a flip kit?

WAY less money and a case stronger then a 231...you know not all of us have a big budget.

Rob....
i have the atlas 3.8 behind my auto tranny.
happy to answer any questions you may have.
you can reach me backchannel at [email protected] if ya want.
the 3.8 is very very nice. you can get out of the truck and walk along with a hand on the wheel at a leisurely stroll. pretty cool.

Let me think about this......D300-$100 from junkyard (I even lucked out and scored one that had been rebuilt recently!), Flip kit-$700. Now you have a iron case, twin sticks and a true 2-lo. In my case add a home made gear spliter made from a old CJ-10 (fixed rear yoke) NP241(-$200 and about $150 in goodies) to the front of the 300 and you come in under 1200 bucks. You now have a strong case, twin sticks and double the gear choices plus a shorter unit. If you want to be a real stickler you can toss in a shaft upgrade and still come in under an Atlas. Plus you can hit the trail in the D300 without the doubler and wait on it. Better yet if you have cash to waste flip a 300 with stock gears and get a 4:1 Klune. This will give you the best of ALL worlds. 4:1's for crawlin, great big:1 for supa-crawlin and a stock low for hammerin' the fire roads. You could also just get the Terra planets and make your own 4:1 underdrive.

Hey if you like to spend cash, get an Atlas. It's your rig and your choice. I just choose not to.

However, please do not make it sound like I'm cheaping, being dumb out or doing it "wrong" by not getting an Atlas....I mean I'm just not near HARDCOREenough to own one I guess.

Compare apples to apples:
D300 $100
flip kit $700
4 to 1 $600
shaft upgrade $500

almost $2k without labor for a case still with weaker gears

OR the Junkyard Wars creation you mentioned above (which sounds cool)

OR an Atlas for the same price maybe cheaper. That was my point.

I will say that the D300 is prity strong. But for the same money why not go Atlas and not worry about it?

plus don't you need an adapter to mate to the AW4 t-case. that cost more. Atlas is a better way to go...
