I think I've answered my own question but I would like to toss it to the powers that be for some confermation.

I have a 86 4 runner with a 22re/auto body is rough A/C is shot rear glass has been replaced by plexi

I have a line on a CLEAN 88 that has a bad auto transmission
its a 3.0/auto

I believe that 88 has a A340H and the 86 has an A340F would swapping the 86 transmission into the 88 involve anything other than swapping bellhousings? It seems pretty cut and dry but I'm a bit noob when it comes to the yota's

Rig will be used as a mild wheeler/DD leaving the 86 open for a possible Ftoy build next year

Thanks

the 4 cylinder trans is weaker. the v-6 supposedly has stronger internals and will actually hold up to a i-force v-8.
throw the 88 v-6 body on the 86 frame, and keep the 22re.
I was thinking more along the lines of tossing the good transmission in the clean body and stripping the 86 of everything and using that 22RE for a start on a F toy build. After watching Dog and them this weekend at We-Rock I believe a full name change is in order here soon.

That's the first time I've heard that.

AFAIK, and based upon everything I have seen and read here and before, based on the Toy factory repair manuals, and based on what I saw under my old rig and others, the auto trannys were all 340H models before 95+. They all had integrated chain drive t-cases, they all had 3-wire control. If you ask me, your 86 and 88 trannys are interchangeable and identical except for the bellhousing.
