Well I have read through all of the archives concerning axle width and found a few ideas as to what everyone is running, but I would like to pose this question for discussion.

What is the optimum axle width to run and why? It seems that wider is better but there has to be a limit to this thinking.

In my experience (which is not as much as many the professional's on this board) I think that 62 inches or so seems to work well all around. Not so large that I have to take unneeded obstacles and the turing radius is still managable. But it is not so narrow as to sacrifice a good ability to sidehill.

The reason I pose this is I am planning my next buildup and would not mind tossing this idea around.

It all depends on where you wheel in my opinion but full-size axles ussually do the trick. The only problem is that they can sometimes be to wide for some obsiticals but it all depends on what you want. I would run full-size if i were you.

It also depends on what width&offset your wheels are + what size tire. My Jeep is 83.75 wide with 60" 60's, 2" offset 15X10 wheel's, 39.5X15X15 tires. It is more then capable for most any trail I know of if only I were Here is a shot of it to give you an idea.

just for comparison i run 62" wide d60/14bolt on my jeep and with 38.5x14.50 tsl sx's mounted on 15x10's with 3.5" backspacing i measure 79.5" total width (outside of tire to outside of tire). i am happy with this for the trails i run. wide but not too wide.

Dang 66CJDean that looks professional that is a super CJ! Killer looking! Just to add I run fullwidth axles a 44 front out of a '73 Chevy with a matching full floater 14 bolt rear on my '77 CJ-5 and I have only done 2 trips with it but, now I wouldn't have nothing else but, maybe one day a 60 fullwidth for the front but, other than that for what I do I love it...I got info from this board too and the rockcrawler chat as well as alloffroad like I said I love fullwidth now to me its the way to go...

Hey Alaska ZJ I run 60" axles on my 5 and I think they are a great width. They have never felt to tippy. What are you thinking about putting 63" wide axles under?

your width is wider than my wheelbase is long but I think that you might have problems running the trails around here, the trees are too close together.

Alaska Assasin, I am in the process of building up my ZJ. Boxing the unibody frame.
Adding in a 44 front and hopefully a 60 rear.

Many many many other things in the works, it is winter time afterall and I have to have something to do. Come on over and we can weld stuff up! LOL

Actually I just got up here this summer. I spent the last few years in Idaho getting my degree and before that I lived in Fairbanks. To tell you the truth I would probably trade my ZJ for a TJ or YJ with a hardtop. Or even a fairly well built CJ with a hardtop. This unibody thing has got me worried if it is worth upgrading anymore.

I will be going out with the LF4W and probably AE4W but as of right now I have only done Purches and wishbone with a friend who is gone now. They were fun but I broke lots of stuff (hense the buildup)
