Big Tires don't always equal big gains

I have noticed that this big a$$ D60 that I put in the rear of my Cruiser tends to drag on a ton of stuff.

Hell, I have already tweaked the cover so that it leaks.

Jason Mace in Vegas has 38.5’s and runs Cruiser axles and at 8psi he has 12 inches of clearance at his diffs.

On the other hand, I run the same tires and I have 10 inches in the rear(D60) and 12 inches in the front(shaved 9” center).

Moral of this story: If you run 36” tires and Cruiser axles (max in my opinion if wheeled hard), then you have as much ground clearance as I do running a D60.

Therefore you must go to 40+” tires to recognize any gains in ground clearance when stepping up from 36’s and Cruiser axles to a Dana 60.

Just thought I would share.

Nolen (wishing the Currie High Pinion 9" wasn't such a POS)

How 'bout 36's & D60 ff & 6 psi on the trail.
Even w/shaving the diff. you still have that
lip to get over. You can't just slide over
sharp rocks like you could w/the LC axle <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">
It only bothers me when I follow trucks w/
smaller tires & they glide right over the
rock that stops me <IMG SRC="smilies/mad.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/massey.gif" border="0">

I so aggree with that statement!!!

I just don't see many people having luck holding their Birfield/Newfields together with Front lockers and big tires.

I was well into the double digits on Birfields and Newfields whenI finally decided to go big.

Where did you get your 9"/D60 hybrid?

Also, what's up with Currie high pinion 9" axles?

Please fill me in.</STRONG>
I got mine from the origional builder of these Sunray Engineering.

Mine is Dodge D60 outers/6 Lug/Warn 1 ton Hubs/F150 Disc Brakes/35 spline inners and outers/9"center w/ nodular housing and shaved housing for clearance.

All the strength of a D60 with the clearance of a Cruiser axle.

The basic axle with stock steering is $4200. I added reverse steering (tie rod behind the axle)$500 and hydrolic assist for $500.

Excellent work, less expensive than Dynatrac and Currie and you at least don't have to worry about D60 "hand" in the front.

As for the Currie RC 9", they use a modified Ford 8.8 ring gear for this. You don't get the strength associated with the 9" and its pinion design. Currie does not recommend it for tires over 35".

Of note, Sunray is designing a TRUE High Pinion 9" that will have all the features and benefits of a 9" with the high pinion option.

Right now they are trying to determine what and ratio of ring gear to purchase since they have to make at least 100 of each ratio to make the first one!!

Aha, the dreaded "peel and leak" Dana 60 cover! As some of you know, my FJ62 came with a rear Dana 60 from the factory, an oddbird semi-floater with the pumpkin offset to the passenger side like a Cruiser axle. After tweaking the cover a couple of times, it *always* leaked, no matter what I tried, and at highway speed the little droplets of 90 weight would cover the rear window and tailgate. I replaced that pig about 4 years ago, and the truck still stinks like 90 weight around the cargo area.

I HAD 35 BFG MUDS ON MY CRUZAH ,DANA 60 REAR ,SPRING UNDER...

WOW THAT SUCKED....CAUGHT THOSE SPRING HANGERS ON EVERYTHING..THE DIF EVERY ONCE AND A WHILE.......

TIRES JUST BARELY RUBED AT FULL FLEX.....

NOW WITH MORE GROUND CLEARANCE....VERY NOTICABLE ......I HAD A HARD TIME WITH THE FRONT TIRES RUBBING THE FENDERS HARD......

THEY WOULD GRAB THE FENDER SO MUCH IT WOULD LOCK THAT TIRE AT MAKE ME PUSH IT.....WHAT A PITA... THATS WHY I STARTED PROJECT MO CLERANCE...

BIG TIRES ARE STILL WORTH THE HASSLE IN MY OPINION..

the cruiser rears seem to hold up to bigger tires just fine. and the big deal is bigger tires make the rocks seem smaller. i am still running cruiser axles in my rig and i havn't poped a birfield yet. knock on wood. but i run a auto and a 3 f but still on 38s. i have been pretty hard on it and so far so good. but i watch hitting it with the tires cranked left or right. i swear some people are just alergic to birfields. i have never poped one but i have friens that wheel with me and they do in all the time. mike
