Best advice, spend many hours here (and other boards) searching and reading before starting something like that. A cage is what protects you when things go bad (or in the case of most here, when the photo-op is just too good to pass up ;) ). In any case, make sure your welds are strong enough to depend on, and your design is ridged enough (in all dimensions) to not fold up with side loads.

Honestly, this pretty much falls into the category of, “If you have to ask, you shouldn’t do it.” A better question (and one that will get better, more respectful replies) is to post some pics/sketches along with your ideas (formed after searching/reading/thinking) for a critique and improvement. Maybe you’ve already done this, but it does not come across in your post…

In any case, I’m not one to flame, so here are some pics of my low budget project. Unfortunately, it has not progressed much past this due to severe income shortages this last year... At least I do have a nicer bench seat thanks to a good friend paying me back for fab work. :D

Cut down frame/wheel base and remove the unnecessary stuff. Also built a subrame to mount the cage. This is what you may be interested in.

Build a cage. Ugly and primitive, but it has worked fine so far.

Testing out the suspension mods and shorter wheel base. Rear suspensions moves exactly as planned/expected, but the springs can’t handle it. Got work to do back there. Either anti-wrap with modified leafs, or give up and link/coil it. Front sucks, mostly due to shackle angles. Got new longer main leaf to go in, just gotta get it done…
