Broke some Unimog portals AGAIN

We had competition at last saturday and had bad luck. We managed to drive 1. st section witout penalties, but on the second section we broke our right rear portal at on rocky and wet (it was raining all day) climb.

Here's few pics of the place and some pics of the damage.

We managed to get the section up even that the rear portal was broken. Sometimes it pulled and other times it was locked. After this climb the judge of the section adviced us to stop. And that was good he told, so that we wouldn't get it more broken.

Tech aside, it's cool to see what you guys are doing over there.

Is the caliper support welded to the side of the drop box and how much does the rig weight ?

thanks,

JARE you should trade your mog axels to my super d44:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

JR welded some big horse shoe shaped strap around the portal boxes. I don't think what he did would help with where Jare's broke though.

There was a video on here of a tug of war at TTC where a dana 70 blew up playing tug of war with a mog axled blazer. The blazer was hopping like mad too. So I don't think the mog stuff is really a problem, in that case it was stroger than a 70. Jare just gets it awn so stuff breaks.
I wonder if Wolfgang is going to chime in here about how awesome Unimog axles are now...
Jare I think you and your father need the invest in some good old Rockwell 2.5 tons, I know they are heavy and don't have the clearance of a portal but I bet they would hold up better for what you need!

While I agree that wolfgang goes a little overboard some times pushing his stuff I dont think that the mogs are weak just because a few guys have broke the portal boxes. In the end I doubt the 2.5s are any stronger, just on this site I have seen broken rockwell knuckles, stripped ring gears and too many broken axle shafts to count. Any thing can be broken. I remember when the dana 60 was considered unbreakable, now I see guys busting those all the time. Just my .02
yep Daniel who is a rockwell pimp (at least he sells several tons of them) will even tell you the unimog stuff is pretty awesome.

A moog can be weaker and still break a 70...due to what you reported...Hoping. I suspect leafs with no traction bars. Load up and bling....

Anyway...First...

*Here's to Finland for gettin' it like they really don't care what breaks. ;)

*Second...Who's rig is the EB...that's not Reynolds of TTC is it. Looks very close though? As an EB'er I would like to know if the design is a copy or what?

*Third....Get it....and stay safe this holiday weekend. (For the Finlinders...we have a holiday on Monday which in many parts of the country means wheelin begins)...personally I am year round but I always love a reason to wheel and party.

yes it is JR = John Reynolds...
@busted Rig
EJS 2003, I watched a guy fixing his broken Rockwell axle.
Finally he did it and hit the trail again (upper helldorado).
After a couple yards and 10 Minutes he broke 3 (three)!! more axle shafts on his rockwell equipped rig.
But i would never say the rockwell is a weak axle!

Jare´s axle is a altered Mog axles. It scares me when i see how the brackets are welded on the cast housings. You do not know why this shit broke.
