Budget X Chassis Build

Since I only have a 1 car garage, I needed a place to work first. I looked into material cost to design a carport and found a kit that was a little cheaper but came with plans so it would be quick and easy to permit and get assembled.

I got it from metaldeck.com and the first one was damaged in shipping so they sent a second one right out and I had it a few days later. Great Customer service!

It took a couple weekends to build and get inspections for it and all. In progress pic. Roof panels are 21' long and it is 15' wide. About 10' to roof or 9' to bottom of beams. Could have gone higher as I bought the RV kit but it would have looked funny with the house.

Still working on it. Life got in the way and needed to rebuilt the 4 runner motor so I can keep wheeling while building. The 4runner is almost switched over to a 22r on propane. This project is going to make a change as I am selling the mogs and going to go lighter but not sure which axles yet. I picked up some 40" stickies on beadlocks recently for this build though and got an atlas mounted up. I guess I need to add some pics.
Sound like a good plan keeping it lighter. Pictures would be nice if you have the time.
Finally got back to working on it. I moved it into the garage (1 car garage) so I will be out of the elements for the winter. I sold the mog 404's as I thought they would be too wide and heavy. I picked up a spidertrax front with ARB and 4.88 gears. 60 outers with 35 spline all the way through. Still had dana u joints though. Also a hi 9 in there.

The rear is a currie hi 9 with 4.88 gears and a detroit. Also has disk breaks with e-brake calipers.

Found some old style 40" MTR stickies to run on it also with forged aluminum raceline beadlocks.

I sold the 42" rockers with the H1 beadlocks.

Here is the rear tack welded as I found I was missing a few parts that I thought I had. This is fully compressed.

uppers are 1.75" x .120 wall DOM and lowers are 2" x .250 wall DOM. Thought I could save some weight with the smaller uppers and since I won't beat them up like the lowers, they would be ok.

Test fit the cooler and gas tank this weekend and it fits perfect. I will probably build a small shelf for the cooler to sit on above the ammo cans as it needs to be a little higher than the gas tank for the top to open.

The bucket seats are too big for the back as I am 5'10 and my head is above the roof line and my forehead is too close to the rear bar.

Luckily I did not cut anything yet and I am going to go back and use the rear the way Mike designed it with a 36" bench seat.

The red ORI's look awesome! These are some of the best looking shocks. the first scratch is really going to hurt.

Got the 40" MTR Stickies

I had to hang a couple HF welding blankets to contain sparks. Got a nice amount of metal stuck in the blanket as well. Luckily I moved the winch line when I was grinding so I did not melt and weaken it.

RCI 2171a gas tank holds 17 gallons and is 30 wide x 17 tall x 7 deep

I ordered an Artec truss for the rear and realized I only ordered enough joints for the rear so I used a ballistic 20% coupon to order some joints for the front.

nice axle and tire combo. good score.

i was about to axe you about the front mog and driveline? it wasnt going to fit very well huh?

yeah, with the mogs the axle is pretty much at the front of the frame (way forward) so the upper link mounts can come up in front of the motor. I think 120" is about the shortest wheelbase and it is really wide too. Then you have to get the drive shaft past the motor and exhaust to the pinion.

Plus I would need to use the 4 link calculator and spend a lot of time figuring things out. This way I can build it the way Mike designed it and get it rolling. With the family and all I don't have the time I used to figure stuff out. Right now I want to get it going then if I don't like something I'll change it later. No sense reinventing the wheel on something that already works well.

It is tough to make it so I can carry all my camping gear too since I wheel up in Tahoe and at the hammers.

Make sure to either have the AN fittings or to leave room for them when looking at the cooler lid height. I was surprised at how much room I needed over the tank just to clear a 90 deg fitting.

Got the rear truss from Artec and got it fitted to the axle. It took forever to get it to contour the axle. Then I decided that it would weld best if I was able to easily rotate it to the best angle for welding. I mounted up 2 of my beadlocks so I can put them on the axle and rotate it into position.

Since my daughter will be riding in the back seat, I got one that both her and her mom love. It is 36" but I am bummer cause after getting it, I think a 42" might fit and give anyone else riding in the back seat just a little more room.

What is your plan to deal with the cracks that will happen in that fuel cell:confused:
What is your plan to deal with the cracks that will happen in that fuel cell:confused:
Where do the cracks occur? I've been running the same cell since 2007 & have had no issues with mine so far.

I have run these types of fuel cells in the past and if well supported, I have had no issues. I may have to fab my own holder as I am not sure anyone makes one for this tank as they do with many of the other RCI cells. Also I like to put rubber bushings between the fuel cell mount and the chassis. The chassis will flex a little regardless of how you brace it which will then put those forces through the aluminum cell leading to the cracks you mention.
if not vented correctly the tank will expand and contract and eventually crack the weld on the inside of the tank and start weeping out of the weld that cracks. seen it multiple times. of course it takes a long time (I had the same tank in mine for 8 years before it had this issue)... just research how to correctly vent it and mount it and you should be fine (sorry can't remember specifics, been a while)
ive heard the same stuff about tanks cracking, i used rubber pucks that were 1/2 thick or less on all four mounting points on a rig with solid mounted engine and trans. with the increased vibration transfer they have snowed not a single sign of fatigue or issue in anyway

Finally made some progress on the back and got the links set to the right length and mounted the shocks. I was happy the tubes I added for the shock mount follow the lines of the chassis and the rear seat. I like the look of the red ORI's.

The power strip next to the bar is for those looking for a little extra excitement.

Looks like it's coming along. I'm still currently building my X-chassis. Its taking longer then I thought. I am currently plumbing the brakes and steering. Still have to do the electrical and sheet metal then maybe a turn-key, hopefully not much longer.
Yeah, it changed direction a couple times but I think it has been for the better. It is not as low budget now that I switched axles but that is ok. Luckily I have been able to break even each time I changed direction on the rig. Now I don't have as much time so I find myself buying more than I originally expected.

Add this to your signature so it is easier for people to find your build thread. Some good links in there too.

I will add that to my sig, thanks. Maybe if I have some time I will add some updated pictures. The rigg looks a lot different and I also change the power train setup. Let me know if you have design question I can send pictures of what I did.
Cool build. Looking forward to seeing the final product

Thanks for the good deals on the parts from PSC and Artec. Hopefully get some parts porn pics up soon. UPS guy is hating me right now!

Keeping the build moving this weekend. Got the front tires mounted on rims. The front lower links on and the uppers mocked in place. Used the Artec mounts and I guess my measurements were off as I thought the driver side would land on the top of the pumpkin better. Going to have to rethink that one this week. Wheel base is sitting at 111 right now. After moving the chassis over to get the driver tire on it still fit in the garage by inches too.

Yes, the tires are past the front of the chassis.

The Richards Tavern beer was brewed by me.
