Budget X Chassis Build

Since I only have a 1 car garage, I needed a place to work first. I looked into material cost to design a carport and found a kit that was a little cheaper but came with plans so it would be quick and easy to permit and get assembled.

I got it from metaldeck.com and the first one was damaged in shipping so they sent a second one right out and I had it a few days later. Great Customer service!

It took a couple weekends to build and get inspections for it and all. In progress pic. Roof panels are 21' long and it is 15' wide. About 10' to roof or 9' to bottom of beams. Could have gone higher as I bought the RV kit but it would have looked funny with the house.

Keeping the build moving this weekend. Got the front tires mounted on rims. The front lower links on and the uppers mocked in place. Used the Artec mounts and I guess my measurements were off as I thought the driver side would land on the top of the pumpkin better. Going to have to rethink that one this week. Wheel base is sitting at 111 right now. After moving the chassis over to get the driver tire on it still fit in the garage by inches too.

Yes, the tires are past the front of the chassis.

The Richards Tavern beer was brewed by me.
What? No beer in this shot. :flipoff2:
Making note for myself that the motor is internally balanced so I have the correct flexplate for converting to automatic transmission.

Front lower links are 33.5". Front uppers are 29"

Picked up a deal off the classified section for some walbro's that arrived today. Got one MP12 and one MP13.

Got some work done on the front link mounts and started fitting the ram mount as well. Found the axle was off and inch to the passenger side so the upper links were not lining up as I would have liked. Luckily I hadn't welding anything up so I moved it an inch over and all lined up as I expected.

got the sniper fab winch mount tacked together

This is how the winch mount looks on the sniper fab chassis

so far the winch mount sits like this in my chassis but I will be moving it below the tubes. You can see the cut on the passenger side of the ram mount. Its only tacked together right now.

Forgot to post these of the rear. Thought I was installing ori 16" travel shocks but all measurements point to them as being 14". That's ok though cause these fit great. !6's would not have fit as nicely. I should still have plenty of flex to get through all the obstacles.

use a dolly when cycling the suspension and keeps you axle from dragging across the floor.

rear seat mount. Need to cap the end still

Where are people fitting a battery in this chassis and what gauge cable are you running. I know Mike (Air Ride)has his all the way in the back. I am trying to leave the back open for camping gear and cooler.

Could you mount it under the dash on top of the transmission tunnel? I've seen a lot of F toy builds with the battery mounted there.
I like your new winch mount, I think I'm going to steel the idea. Looking good, I'm still waiting the the UPS guy to show with my parts that I order, parts coming too slow.
I like the winch mount too. I thought I would be able to drop my warn xd9000i in as it measured as barely fitting between the frame rails but since the sides of the mount are angled it won't quite fit. This mount was designed for the warn 9.0RC so I may have to change out to it as it will fit in here much nicer. It is also a little smaller so it should fit better with the radiator.

I am going to run 2 odyssey 925 batteries bottom to bottom in the artec mount right next to the back seat. it will fit nicely and be accessible. I will figure out a way to cover the terminals for safety and put a cup holder in it.

Also I just remembered I took 5" out of the ram mount since my axles are custom width so it would fit. It was longer than my axle tubes as it was made for full width. It was about 38" wide for those wondering.
speaking of your front axle...Holly fucking scrub radius! Did that thing come out of a golf cart?
That is the problem with buying used. It was narrower than I wanted but the price was nice. Its pretty much the same width as a toyota solid axle mini truck. I am going to run 2" wheel spacers all the way around to get a little more width out of it.

Am4x4 -Thanks for the pics of your battery mount.

Continued progress on the build this weekend. I got the walbro pickups installed in the gas tank. YOu can see the gas gauge float sitting on the line so the gauge will not go to the bottom of the tank. I looked at rotating it to the other side but there were other interference issues with the old takeup in the tank so I left it on top.

These stupid washers needed to be unscrewed from each bolt as they compress down between the flange and bolt.

new outlet for walbros.

The ram mount is finally where I want it and all the gussets are trimmed to fit my shortened version. Thanks to my buddy for convincing me to look at rotating it up even though he is going to be pissed when I get over stuff and he gets stuck on it. :flipoff2:

more pics

just a hair off from the hole depending on how straight I eyeball the tire.

I pulled one of the high steer arms off and found the studs have been upgraded to 9/16" which is cool except now I need to drill out my new Artec arms to accept them. Then put them on and set up the double sheer portion. One cool thing about the double sheer set up is that the bolts thread into the ram so you can use them to check to see things are lining up without building links right away.
Added a bar from the window to the front grill to use for attaching the front shocks late today and realized that it is in the way for mounting the radiator. I guess that is why I always see bends on these upper bars. I'll have to think about this one as I like the lines of the chassis with it so not sure how I want to correct it. Having computer difficulties so the pictures won't be coming till tomorrow. I really like how this thing is turning out.

Some of it just takes forever as I try to grind things to fit nice and tight.

Had to take a break to make sure the 4 runner was ready for this season. Put an Artec battery mount in as I was sick of dealing with mu battery sliding around. I ordered the one for a 1500 battery and then found out I had a 1400. So it went under the knife and welded back together to fit a 1400 perfect. :shaking: Rebuilt my motor mount since it ripped off the frame last time out. Found I was missing a bolt from my t-case mount as well. Radio works and the oil is changed too. Now to start it.

Got the battery mount for the x chassis to hold two 925's bottom to bottom and that thing is super small! I think I might be able to find a spot for it.
Got the gas tank mount from Dan at Motobuilt. I drew up my gas tank in solidworks and sent it over to him and he made me a sweet tank mount since I couldn't find one that anyone was making for the RCI 2171 tank. Came out great! I love finding a shop that will work with you.
I know it is tough making only 1 but hopefully since no one else is making mounts for this tank he will make some money off the new design. Came with nice grade 8 hardware and stover style lock nuts too.
There are 6 pieces incase you are wondering. This was done to keep costs down.

Also got the cigarette lighter powered up this weekend in my 4runner as I lost power to it when I removed the wiring harness and switched to propane. Now I can charge my ipod to keep the tunes playing.

link to fuel tank thread if needed. see post 18.

That mount looks like it turned out sweet!
Moved the motor down a couple inches and back about an inch. Now when the floor goes in, I won't need a tunnel over the trans and t-case plus I get a lower center of gravity. Got the headers installed and they clear the chassis as well. Ran out of time to make some new motor mounts with it being Mothers Day weekend. I gotta work on getting some pics of the shiny new headers. I am much happier with the way everything it fitting now.

My tranny came with an aluminum finned deep pan which I may need to swap out as it is right at the bottom of the subframe. I may need to swap to the standard depth one to tuck it in better. Right now I just want to get it running though so that will be a project for another day.
Shiny new headers. Went with the Sanderson silver coated QP-1000 as these tuck in nice and tight to the block and have a center outlet.
The headers with the outlet towards the rear tend to hit things on the chassis and I tried 2 different styles that I was able to borrow from friends and neither fit. thought I would post the actual header I used to save others time in searching for what worked. As I looked around I couln't find part numbers for what others were using. These were not the cheapest option but they do fit.

I am not sure I can call it a roller since the shock hoops and motor mounts are only tacked in place but it finally feels like I made some real progress getting the shocks in there.
