Having been convinced to keep the FJ40 and continue upgrading/modifying, I just sold my existing roll cage (original rear hoop and front hoop from SOR). I am thinking about a full custom cage and would appreciate some suggestions or ideas.

So far all I have planned for is to tie it into the frame and it will support the seats. I want a "family style" since I have children that will come with on some trips. Other than that, I know triangluation is a good thing. Any other suggestions? Anyone have a "favorite" design they want to share picts of?

I have access to a friends machine shop with a JD2 bender and tig welder, so I'm thinking I could do about anything (within reason). Got a great deal on the 0.120 wall 2" DOM - traded some spare gun parts for the 100ft of material.

Looking forward to ideas so I can start bending.

i have yet to build one for myself . it's still in the works. but what i want to do is put 4 bars from the front hoop to the rear. 1 hoop over the drivers left shoulder, 1 over the passengers right shoulder and the other two between the driver and passenger. on the two bars between the passenger and driver i would use it as a place to put the cb, radio, light switches, etc. the rear hoop would be a double bar set up two hoops seperated by a couple inches, with a plate plate on top the comes down the sides a couple inches. then from the rear hoop make a "l" to the rear corner of the tub. next make a cross brace from the bottom of the tub back to the rear hoop, this gives it the triangular strenght. to finish it out put a bar from the back of one "l" to the other "l" . you would then be able to have a full soft top to provide shade for the kiddies in the rear.

I started on my cage a couple of weeks ago, doing it in my spare time, and have it about 90% complete. I made a double mid hoop with 1.5''space in between. The rear hoop is shaped somewhat like a rollbar in the older 4runners. I made a halo from the mid hoop to the windshield ansd welded legs to that. The front has 2 mid spreaders about 10''apart as well as the rear. I have a diagonal run from the top rear hoop to the lower part of the mid hoop on each side. The front legs have braces to the halo and the halo has braces to the mid hoop.I have a dash spreader and a spreader on mid hoop behind seats for a harness. I still have to add a diagonal bar across the mid hoop, bars from the lower part of the front legs to the mid hoop, and tie it all to the frame. When I get some new seats, I plan to tie them to the cage also. Right now I have used at least 100' of tubing and will probably use another 15',if not more, before I am done. Nolen will probably get some pics of it this weekend.

are all the diagonals (the small ones around the windscreen and stuff all necessary?) because they seem like overkill, thats if you trust the welder! but hell, if it saves your ass then its all good i suppose! (and it looks (HELLA COOL)
