I recently bought this 1980 Toyota 4x4 pick-up from a guy. He said it's got a 231 (3.8L) Buick motor in it. Is there anyway I can tell for sure that it is not a 2.8L, or can anyone recognize this motor.

Reason I need to know is, I have to adjust the timing. At the moment it is at 16 degrees. And, I have to find a power steering pump bracket, so I can complete the poswer steering conversion. Thanks

Looks like a 231 to me. The 2.8 is a 60 degree V-6. The timing is probably set at 16 because of an aftermarket cam. If you want to back it down. Try 12, or 14. What a great motor for a toyota conversion.

Looks like a buick motor to me as well. If it was a 2.8L, you would probably know it because the angle at which their cylinders are positioned is pretty steep like this V as its a 60* V6, while an old buick 231 is a 90* V6 meaning its not as steep... more like a tradiational V8.
