What I need to know is can I remove my front driveshaft and then drive it in 4wd. The reason I ask is there is something wrong with my 84 and I've been told that it may be the driveshaft or it may be the transfercase. So I figured if it still had the problems without the driveshaft attached then it must be the transfercase and if it didn't then it must be the driveshaft.

Uh... Why not just unlock your hubs and verify you're in 2WD High?

Then your front driveshaft, axles, and differential are not spinning - so if it still makes your noise or whatever, it's not the driveshaft.

But yes, you can run your truck in 4WD without a front shaft and not break anything. Just don't drop it into low range and gun it, as you only have one axle getting the extra torque load of low range, instead of two. Keep it in high range and drive like normal and you'll be fine.</font>

So if its unlocked and in 2wd the transfercase still spins and stuff? I know the driveshaft and stuff doesn't spin when unlocked. Also it doesn't make the noises and stuff when in 2wd and unlocked. It only does it when locked.

You can do that, and it MAY help isolate the problem, but don't completely rely upon this if the problem isn't presented with the D.S. out. The issue may be related to a load being applied to the front drivetrain. Just keep this in mind. Good luck!

Well in 4wd its a loud whining noise and in 2wd but locked its a spinning rattle kind of like a loose belt or chain on a pulley. It also throws it back into 2wd when I try and drive in reverse when in 4wd.

Well I pulled the Dshaft but didn't have to drive it around. I just spun the Tcase by hand and it was making a pinging sound and sounded like those old time skates with the metal wheels. It also binded up a couple times when I would spin it to the left. So what the hell do I do now? Is it pretty simple to pull the Tcase and is this something that can be rebuilt or should I start hitting the Jyards?

Get a new one from the yards. Kinda hard to find sometimes. The gear oil full or empty or what? Support the tranny drop the cross bar under the case and undo 6 bolts that you see from the rear of the case, Take out the 4wd stick shift and pull. It will be heavy. Check the For sale area here for a case and see if anyone is close. J-yards get spenders sometimes.
