I ran into a problem while replacing my diff today. I busted a shim in half, plus I think that shim isn't the right width now. So if I bolt the axles back in (Dana 35) and close up the housing, can it be driven without the diff in place? Or do the axles need the carrier bearings for support?

I can tow on a dolly, but if it does not hurt it to drive it, I would rather do that.

Thanks in advance

You have to have the carrier in to support the axle shafts inside the diff. BUT I would be interested in seeing you drive it without the carrier in.

Man, you guys don't cut nobody and kind of slack do ya. Where is the mission statement? I haven't read it, but does it say that this guy has to obtain a certain level of Jeep wisdom before he can post? Yeah it was a neophyte type a question, but shoot, you gotta learn somehow. At least it sounds like he's working on his own rig and ain't just droppin it off at a shop.

Anyway, I'll save you the time of responding this to me and give myself a big

Thanks for the help. Let me put my helmet back on so I don't hurt myself getting on the short bus. "Click Click" All better now.

I just wanted to confirm what I had thought. And you guys did.

And yes, it was a stupid question, to someone who knows the answer.

I've said it once before.

There is a place where people go to ask these kinds of questions , because they do these kinds of things , and because they run this type of equipment .

Actually, without the carrier, no, the shafts will flop all around, but just put in the carrier, leave in the side gears and wedge a 2x4 into the middle of the carrier and wrap it with duck tape to keep it in... I drove home 70 miles like this once... Mainly because i blew the spider gears through the diff cover... Hugh
