Ah yes, I remember this well. I think it was 90 or 91 the first time I encountered this problem. When I finally got the two apart, I found this red pasty stuff on the inside of the imput gear and in the splines of the tranny tailshaft. Some sort of amalgamated oil and metal shavings that kind of bonded the gear to the shaft.
An absolute PITA to separate. Many blocks of wood, many prybars, and many trips to the thesaurus to come up with new swear words!
If you put the old locknut back on the tranny tailshaft to protect the threads, you can tap on the output shaft while you are prying. This actually helps quite a bit.
