So i did a compresion check and came up with 165 ish on the front 3 cylinders and 150 on the 4th. Does this mean that i should take the head off? ( I couldnt check it with the engine warm cause its halfway apart) does that matter?

Also anyone have any ideas on how to get the crank pulley bolt off without air tools. I tried to use a breaker bar and the starter, but im pretty sure the starter took a $hit on me cause it wont turn over!

id take off the head, cause its the proper way to change a timing chain, pluss you can rebuild the head, and clean the intake, change the fuel filter real easy, and put in an engnbldr cam .

as for taking crank pully off:
yeah put the tranny in 5th gear, put the parking brake on, then have at it with a breaker bar plus have someone push the brakes

good luck :flipoff2:

fix the starter! :D adjust the valves and retake the compression test.
see if there is any change after that. might save a lot of work.

15 lbs is marginal, but not bad. If it were mine, I wouldn't worry about that difference. Number 3 cylinder on the head is were there seems to be a more common failure and crack from the water port over to the chamber near the exhaust port.

The "proper way" is usally relative... how much time, money and resources do you have? I'd do a leakdown test to see if you have a cracked head or bad head gasket, and from what you described it probably needs at least a head gasket. Once you pull the head you can find out how much of it needs to be rebuilt. With the head off I'd definitely have it rebuilt at that mileage. If the camshaft is worn and needs replacing, the Engine Builder 261 Crawler (was about $90? -- or my choice the CompCam 252S (about $163) are two good choices for upping your torque (you'd see about 8% increase in torque and HP numbers). I bought a later model rebuilt head for my 85 22R here locally for $450. With a new stock cam it was $500.00.

I took the starter out and had it tested, and it was fine. What do you guys think the problem is??

Also, if i decide to change the cam will it still pass smog?
On cams, you'd need to check with the supplier/manufacturer to be sure, but I'd be really surprised if the EB Crawler 261 or the Compcam 252S had any problems with effecting emissions. Bigger long duration "race" cams that lower your vacuum at idle can effect emissions.
