How hard and what is involved in changed a trail shaft on a 79 bronco with a C6? The trans that is in it right now is shot and I got another C6 for free but it is not a 4x4 trans so the trail shaft needs to be swapped. Can this be done (swap tail shafts between the two C6s)? Any info or web sites that you can point me to would be a big help.

Thanks

Thanks!! Sorry for being such a Newbie but I never knew they would have the manuals at the library.

The Bronco that I am asking is one that I might buy this weekend. The guy is asking $600 for it with a rebuilt 351 and a bad C6 but also has a good C6 that comes with it. It is a real POS on the out side but nothing some chopping will not solve (wheel wells are very rusted). <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> Is the 79 bronco a good platform to build on? I know that I need to cut some weight off of it so the stock running gear will last longer but besides that is there anything else that I should look out for?

It requires complete dissasembly of the transmission to remove and replace the tail shaft. It is not hard to do ,but , you have to keep everything clean when you disassemble and reassemble the tranny.modt tranny shops can do the job for less than $100.00 which might be the way to go since you have never been into a tranny before.

Russ is right, you have to completly tear down the transmission to get out the output shafts to swap them. It's not that hard though. Just pull everything out starting at the front (keeping everything clean) and when you get out the output shaft and swap in the 4x4 one, then just put everything back in just like it came out. I rebuilt my C6 in two nights in my kitchen just like that ( I also had to convert a 2wd tranie to 4wd). Its really not as dificult as some would have you belive.

I also used the Hanes Ford Transmission Manual, but it's not nessacery.

Good luck
