Swapping input shafts is cake. You don't even really have to pull the top cover, but having the top cover off makes it a LOT easier when you are dealing with a mainshaft as long and heavy as the 4500. Just pop off the top, then remove bearing cover for the input shaft, pull out the input shaft and replace with new. You will have to lift up on the mainshaft a bit to line them up and it will slip right into place. reinstall the bearing cover and the top cover and presto your done.
