Just to go along with the birf wars, Bobby, AllPro, and PIG have all got some new inners to keep your wallets empty for the Christmas season:D

Question is, what's the difference? Both AP's and Bobby's are 4340, made by Superior, same exact design. But are the heat/cryo treatments different?

PIG's axles are also 4340, but cut down to a smaller diameter as to spread the load out evenly and allow some twisting and absorbtion. Sounds good in theory, but do you all think it will work?

AND, Marlin has some bling bling polished chromo inners from Moser. Don't really know anything else. Are they 4340 as well?

All are priced about the same. So which ones to get?? If I had a bunch of $$ I'd go 300m from PIG, but I don't have it. Actually I'd just go Mog/9" hybrids with a bunch of money:D

after looking at marlins, they look like they might limit steering because of how thick they are right at the 27 spline portion. It looks like you would get major bindage. Anyone else agree?

I dont really think that our toy front knuckles will turn far enouf for that to be an issue. and if yours turns that far your probably breaking birfs.

As far as the inners go I spent the extra money now for the 300m's so I wont have to spend it later replacing broken chromos.
So ask Santa real nicely for some extra cash for some bling shyt.;)

I'm looking for a recent pic that was postesd about the turning radius of old Longs vs new ones that show a shaft on there and fully turned that would show how much clearance there is. Anybody remember where it's at?

With all these great new products for the Toyota axles, now I just need some sort of beefy diffs, as those seem to be a week point for me. Oh, and some bolt on portals, too:D

Pigs 4340 shafts are the strongest of the bunch.

When you cut shafts, for maximum strength you want the minor diamter of the splines to be the same diameter of the shaft. Otherwise you get a stress risor right at the end of the splines. So no only are Pigs shafts stronger than the competitions they also allow for more deflection.

As it stands now I will be getting a set of Pigs. Same axle strength if not better AND a better spline design. Even if Marlins would be stronger the extra 70 bucks is a deal breaker right now.

I like cheap

no problem Im4yotas,just trying to help ;)

but call me stupid, but for some reason im just not comprehending(sp?) the need for the bigger axle( i understand stronger-chromos) but i seen pigs and everyone elses but no matter how thick ya make them or whatever, isnt the weak point still going to be where it narrows down to the 27 spline? like on the pic that Chris G. posted up where it narrows down

are they used? and are you breaking them in the front? if so could that be because they were ran one way for its whole life and now your running it backwards, or does that make a difference? i am just wondering this since i put an e locker up front from a 97 runnah and i don;t wanna break that.

First 2 sets were what came stock in my truck with 180,000 miles on em. 7.5" up front and 8" rear, both open on blad as hell 31's. Wasn't even bouncing a lot or giving it hell. 3rd set was my buddy's stock rear setup that I got when he went to 5.29's. About 90,000 miles, and hardly any rocks before I got em. Wasn't really abusing them when they went either. Though I had been on earlier trips...

[EDIT]I have not yet physicaly confirmed that it's the R&P. Broke it last weekend at the Hammers, and haven't torn it apart yet. But it sure as hell feels like the R&P, just like last time.

Ben, I havn't made up my mind yet, Hopefully this thread will shine some light on the right ones for me. Leaning towards PIG's 4340's right now.

No, that isn't the weak point on our axles.

Could any of you vendors elaborate on the treatments to these axles? I'm curious if AP cryos theirs, cuz they said they were the same exact axle as Bobby's, but I have a hunch the treatments are quite different. Also, what treatments do you do, PIG?

I don't know if this will shed any light on the strength of any of the products, but may answer the question about moser. This is from their web site:

"Should you be concerned about breaking an axle?
To achieve maximum performance you should use the smallest axle available that will safely handle the torque your car produces.
The torque rating of Moser Engineering Custom Alloy Axles are as follows:
30 Spline - 6,200 ft. lbs. (per axle)
31 spline - 7,000 ft. lbs. (per axle)
33 spline - 8,200 ft. lbs. (per axle)
35 spline - 9,600 ft. lbs. (per axle)
40 spline - 12,000 ft. lbs. (per axle)
Which axle size is right for me?
The way to pick your axles is so one axle will handle all of the maximum torque your car can produce. That way it is practically impossible to break an axle because you have at least a 200% safety factor."
There is a calculator to help figure out the torque rating:

Torque (ft. lbs.):
First Gear Ratio:
Rearend Gear Ratio:
Efficiency Factor: x .90(due to
frictional losses)

Axle Tech Results:
Calculated Torque (ft. lbs.)*

So here's how my truck would stand:

Torque (ft. lbs.): 140
First Gear Ratio: 20.55 (3.954 x 2.28 x 2.28)
Rearend Gear Ratio: 4.30
Efficiency Factor: x .90(due to
frictional losses)

Axle Tech Results:
Calculated Torque (ft. lbs.)* 11,133

So does that mean I need a 40 spline axle according to Moser?
Here's the link to the axle calculator:
