I'm not particularly computer savvy. I have a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series that is about two years old. What's the general feeling on McAfee or Norton antivirus software? Is it mandatory? Optional? I had McAfee for the last year or so but let it expire. Bad move? The computer works okay, but every once in awhile throws a tantrum and takes forever to get onto the interwebs. And by forever, I mean about 7-10 minutes. Should I renew the McAfee? Or deal with the intermittent slowness?

Windows 10 has pretty damn decent built in stuff unless you are constantly going to nudie sites.

I've always had more issues with Norton or McAfee than they fixed. Constantly running and hogging memory.

I just run Spybot and Malwarebytes, and even then don't run them very often. Basically don't download stupid shit, or open e-mails with iffy attachments...

Haven't had a virus in ages.

I don't look at any porn but I do constantly google whatever it is I might be interested in at any given moment. Usually just stupid motorcycle crap, or nutrition info, offroad stuff... You name it. Not sure which version of windows I have. I will check.

I currently have this problem with my home pc as well.
Deleting Chrome tonight, I think it's the culprit.

No Antivir has found anything.
I even replaced the WIFI card....

I'm a firm believer in don't download anything and don't click on something that you didn't ask for specifically. The only protection I use is whatever Chrome comes with and I've never had a virus.

I wonder if virus software is more bloatware than anything. People with the worst running machines have a ton of virus protection.

As others have said, Microsoft Defender that comes with Win 10 is a decent AV, as long as you aren't exceedingly stupid with clicking on shit you'll be fine

McAfee and Norton aren't much better than what they claim to protect you from, they'll hijack your afternoon to scan and spam constantly trying to get you to upgrade.

Defender and don't use the pc with an admin account.
^ This x1000

Restricted file permissions is a huge factor in preventing virus damage. No need to use the admin login for porn surfing. Use a "guest" account for daily web surfing and use.

Use the built in Microsoft crap and stay off the sketchy porn sites. :smokin:
This^ (or even better), skip the sketchy sites of any kind altogether.
Then add Adblock Plus, or UBlock Origin to block unwanted ads.

True in the old days but they've both improved markedly.

If you're like me and see a site marked as "malicious" and just have to go there you need good protection.
