I was curious what it would take to convert a 22R to 22RE? Is it as simple as installing a knock sensor (drilling and tapping?) and bolting on an EFI intake, or does it require an entire head swap? If the head swap is required, how are they different? Thanks so much,

The head is different, the block in different, almost all of the major componants are different. I ended up swapping in a '91 4cyl into mine. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

Arnold has an 86 truck that he's converting to EFI. If you get a hold of him, he can tell you all about it. I think he got a donor Runner of the same year.

This is not true on the later 22R's. There are heads on the earlier blocks that have the mounting for the 22RE intake. Starting in about 84. This is becouse the Celica had EFI in 84. Only mod would be to drill and tap a hole for the knock sensor. You can tell by looking for extra intake bolt holes near #2 and #3.

Some time in late 85, the 22R and 22RE is the exact same engine. Just a different sticker on the valve cover. This is the motor with flat top pistons and the shorter block, higher compression, closed combustion chamber, etc...

What gadget said. What year is your 22R? I did this to an '82 22R by putting on an '84 head, (the only one I could use). The head has to have 20 threaded holes on the intake side to take the EFI. My block did not have the boss for the knock sensor hole. What I did was to weld a nut that fit the sensor to a bolt that fit another hole.

And of course you will need EVERYTHING from the EFI truck. After that all you need is time.

Gadget and 85TrailToy are 99.9% right.... if you're going from carb to EFI, you'll also have to change the cam. Mike Fox (on this list) has done this swap. Here's the LINK to his write up. Enjoy.
