I have a 98 2.7 5spd and am wanting to go w/ a 4.7:1 ultimate taco box from marlin crawler. I was told by a friend that the stock tacoma 3.4l t-cases have a 23 spline input shaft but it is stronger then the 26 spline 2.7l input shaft cases. I am already weary of putting such a large gear reduction infront of my stock t-case and know that some people are breaking input shafts off. Would it be worth it to buy a 3.4l case and just get the crawl box for that?

I have read about those concerns, but I don't have an answer for you. I will have a 3.4 t-case for you though if you need one (going passenger drop). :D

I think one problem might be the larger gear reduction in the first case instead of the second, so the second input shaft gets a lot more torque than if there was only a 2.28 in front of it. There might be more to it than that though?

So does anyone know if the 3.4l t-case is stronger despite the fewer spline count?

Everytime I call marlin I am horribly disappointed w/the people I talk to and their lack of knowledge. The receptionist is TERRIBLE especially. Anyways I did call them 1st and the guy I talked to...the "tacoma specialist" had no idea and said he'd never installed a taco box in a tacoma. :shaking:

Uhmmm some how a doubt that since they installed the one in my '05. Next time you call and get Tessie, ask her for Dave. He'll get you all sorted out.

Jamie, that tid-bit of info I gave you was givin to me straight from the man himself over a phone conversation. I had just blown a bearing retainer in my crawler a day before TO and I was to lead trails the next day. In desperation I posted on Marlins board begging for any help I could get. I received a call from Marlin within the hour, as he was on his way to TO as it was. I beleive what he said was "you mean you have access to a 23 spline box" Yes, I said "well go to the junkyard, get yourself a top shifting V6 T-case from a 95.5 - '04 slap it together and you have just upgraded your drivetrain" ..Something along those lines.
I beleive the reason for the 23 spline 3.4 being stronger than the 26 spline 2.7 is because even though there are less splines the 23 spline has a larger diameter shaft..
Whether it is worth it to upgrade your T-case or not is up to you, depending on how hard you're wheelin' and if you're going to run over a 37" tire. I wheel the living shit out of my junk on 37's (maybe 39's soon) and I had what I needed to upgrade so it was a no brainer.

Right on, thanks for verifying! I have access to a tcase from a 99 3.4 w/80k for 100 bucks so I am trying to figure this out. So if I go w/that, I need the front adapter on the crawl box to be for my 2.7l 5spd and then the rear adapter needs to be for a 23 spline 5spd v6?

The front case (crawler) will need to be set up to bolt to your 2.7 tranny, the back of the crawler will bolt up to either the 2.7 T-case or the 3.4 T-case. Just be sure that the output shaft on the front case receiving the V6 case is 23 spline...
100$ for the 3.4 case ?!? Do it I say!!

Email or call Jim at Inchworm.
gonna second this, he will get you sorted out and always answers the phone himself.

you could even just replace your current case with the lefty geared case, however you dont have the choice of stock low range, and it can be slow at times on faster trails.
