OK, so I picked up the 6BT I bought, and I've been springing over my '71 '55 to make room for both the engine and my 35" TSL SX's. I finished the spring over tonight, and hoisted the 6BT into the engine compartment just to put the weight on the front springs and see how much they would squash down.

Perhaps these springs are in really good shape, but I was kinda shocked to see that they only compressed a meager 1". ONE FREAKIN' INCH! I was expectin' a helluva lot more. I've been wondering what springs I would scrounge to add to my existing pack, but now I'm wondering if it'll be needed after all. I've been reading your guys' horror stories about old worn out springs, and I was prepped for these to puke. Guess not (yet).

Granted, I don't have the tranny and t-cases in yet, but still, the brunt of the weight is that diesel 6BT (directly over the springs).

Measuring for the shoehorn: The 6BT will fit with the stock fan leaving a whopping 1/2" to play with. NO INTERCOOLER. I don't think I'm really gonna need the extra power anyway. Measurements so far tell me that if I leave the A/C compressor on, it will come within 1/4" of the frame. That's a bit tight, but I would really like to keep it just so I can have onboard air (I don't need it for air conditioning), but we'll see.

On the SOA side, she looks a bit pathetic with the small stocker tires. I ordered my custom BS rims from Summit last week, so they should be arriving anytime. Also, I have yet to cut and turn my knuckles, as I have to get the engine and tranny completely in and mounted to get the angles I need. Right now the front spring perches are just tacked on.

Also, I yanked the stock motor (blown), tranny and t-case out, along with the stock rearend. As far as I know, the 3 spd tranny, t-case, and rear axle work just fine, If anyone wants them, come get'em quick, they are yours for the taking.

If no one wants'em, they are likely gonna hit the dumpsta'!

dump the ac pump and get a Co2 Cylinder for air...are you runnin drum brakes?

I'd like the t-case ... don't chuck it!
I met you at Royals in Orem when we were doing the satellite ( Delorme)tracker thing in your grease van then we went over to Richards shop...I have relatives in Denver .. how far is that?

If you want a small fan that will fit on the stock cummins pulley you can use a Land-Rover clutch fan from a Discovery, range rover, or (like I did) a Defender, without the clutch.

I am putting a 5.9BT in a Land-Rover and I was surprised that the springs didn't bag that much. I think the extra 200 lbs on the nose isn't bad at all.

Wait till you get it started. Use loctite everywhere :D

OK, camera has arrived, and I've taken a bunch of pics. I have to install a USB port on my 'puter real quick.

In the meantime, my wheels have also arrived (today has been like christmas! :)). Of course, they are unpainted, and I was struck with the impulse to just shoot them with clear coat for that really cool, 'Mad Max' look. I've heard that clear coat on bare metal won't stick worth a damn. Can anyone confirm this? Got any tips to help it stick?

Hmmm, can you compress enough air in one of those cylinders to refill 4 35X15.5" meats? I'd also like to get a set of AT's to run most of the time and then swap out to the SX's when I hit the trail, thus it'd be cool to run an impact wrench for swapping wheels! I could likely get enough air storage for such a feat between two hollow bumpers and maybe a small storage tank to boot (all plumbed as one)...

I am running the stock drums...for now. Why?

Hey Berg, I remember ya! Denver is about 5 or 6 hours from me. The t-case is yours, but you gotta take the tranny with it! :D Man, drive a hard bargain, eh? You want the rear end, too? The price is right!

Cool Perry can't wait to see the pics :) C02 tank will do a hundred tires at least and costs like $12 to fill. Only thing is it can ice over your air guns but that doesn't stop a lot of people. Definetely the way to go, that is what I'm doing too. :)

Ditto the CO2 tank
I got the BLING powertank valve and I am running a 20# tank.
This sucker is faster than a york... I filled 4 of my tires and 1 of another guys tires in the time it took this guy to fill 1 tire with his your.

My only problem with my tank is mounting it. I am wrapping it with a towel, then cam strapping it to my roll bar. IT holds, but I would feel better about amore secure mount. (I have to tighten the cam straps every so often on a bumpy trail).

FWIW, I am dreaming of putting either a 4BT or a 6BT into my FJ40....

Perry.. I'll take the trans and t-case.. just got to figure out how to get it up here. I'll do some checking.


James.. do the right thing and go a 4bt on that short wheel base.
I know a guy down here in UT County that claims he can get you a 4bt w/ sm465 for $1500 out of Frito trucks. Fleet maintained with 100k+

Damn, I do too! It's gonna be a few days, I've got an old beater computer here with no USB port that I use for web-surfing. When I ordered the cam, I was using a much newer one (with a USB port), but it died before the cam arrived.

Long story short: I ordered a USB card last night, should arrive in about 3 days....

That gives me some time to get the SX's on the pig...get'er ready for some poser shots! :D

well, I have an sm420 in my FJ40 right now that I am happy with... Alls I'd do is add a ranger torque splitter (overdrive) and I'd be set! Let me know if you can find out more information about these frito lay trucks...

Here's the SOA. Notice I haven't done anything with my drag link. I'm pondering getting a hi-steer kit, and I figured I'd await my decision before I dove in...Front SOA is just tacked into place. I'll cut and turn my knuckles after the powertrain is installed...

And the dual t-cases (toyota pickup, mated via Marlin Crawler kit... It'll be interesting to see how these babies handle the 6BT's torque. Yes, I'm going to give them a try. Worst case scenario is I have to yank it and replace it with something beefier. I'm just too curious to see how they will do...


And last and definately least, my wheels. You've all likely seen these before. I wanted to get 15" deep wheels (to match my tires depth), but 10" is the deepest you can get them with a custom backspace (2.5"):


I'm just about to leave for the shop to mount the tires onto the wheels, I'll take some pics of the motor and my tires whilst I'm there.

Also, today during lunch break I fired the motor up for the first time since I got it (the first time I've heard it run!), I barely bumped the starter and she roared to life! Purred like a kitten. I couldn't help but sport a woody :D. I've got her filled with Amsoil 5w-30. I can't wait to get the tranny...

Cool Perry very cool. Reminds me a lot of my piggie, aka a huge nightmare :D Someone hit that very same corner of mine but it was pulled out. I'll post some links to my bodywork threads. Took so much effort it was not even funny but worth it in the end. I have the 4BT tweaked right now and the thing is like a rocket ship and it still getting good mileage. Only thing is the noise is unbearable. It's like the difference between a 12V like yours and a early 24 valve, decent idle but real loud knock especially under load, almost like a whole new engine. But the thing is fast, and that is with no injector mods or anything...
