I am thinking about going to 5.38's in my 44 but I'm not sure about the strength. Who here runs them and what do you think? I'll be rolling on 37's for a bit then going to 40's.

I was runiing in gm 10 bolt 30 splines f&r 5.38 Richmond (similar to d44) with 4.3 vortec +200Hp for about 2 years, , first runing 38 radial swamper and then 39.5 boggers, my expirience is that the weack link it always gonna be the u´joint of the stubs first if you go warn axle shafts chormo moly and ctm or 760-x then the r&p gonna be weak link

if you want go big tires, go 60`s .

I ran 5.89s for two years, one year with 35s one with 38s. V6 and automatic. Broke 2 transfer cases (Dana 18) and 24 axle shafts (only 2 rear axles), but never the R&P. The 5.89s have more teeth than the 5.38s though, they are just very small teeth.

I'm running 5:38's in my front RD44. Blew my axles out last year and went to Warn alloys and CTM's with 37's. Everything has been fine since the Warn's and CTM's. If you have a choice go D60, especially with the 40's. Think about shaving it if you do...

I've been runnin 5.89's for 2 years in my |-6/t-5/d300/35's. never had a problem with them.. we'll see now with the 318/46rh/d300/37's though.

Everyone has been amazed that i havent blown them thus far.
I'm pretty easy on the stoopid pedal, and i know that my shafts are the weak link as of now.

like i said. rig will be on the trail next week and we will see how it goes.

I run 5.38's in my D44's with 36 TSL's. I only have a 4 banger though, and i am aware of what i have so i am fairly easy on the go juice.

They are holding up well, but again my axles are the weak link.

Good luck:D

2.5L 4cyl/SM420/NP231/LP Dana44 Front/EB 9" Rear, Ox up front, spool out back, 5.38's, 35" MTR's, no R&P failures thus far, almost 2yrs on them and broke 4 stock front shafts.

37's might be pushing it with a Dana 44......40's IS pushing it.

Where did you get the 538's for the nine? Been running 538's in 44's with 38's, the front HP and the rear reg 44, breaking alloy shafts in the rear. Gonna upgrade rear, currie said no 538's for the nine? Thought my only option was 60, had rather build the 9. thanks

Aaron Beckstead (TheDangerRanger) is the guy to ask, he ran 5.38's in an RC 44 and broke EVERYTHING else, I think the gears and detroit held up, all the rest of the parts broke (shafts, hubs, knuckles, etc)

Actually they are 5.37's, whoopdy doo. Currie prolly meant no 5.38's for their weak-ass "not meant for tires over 33" HP 9"(really HP 8.8" in a 9" housing) thingy-ma-bob

I got my gears and spool from DTS, now I'm building a new HP Dana 44 front because when I built my 44 front you couldn't get 5.38's for the HP axle.

how's that work? if you ran a 4.88 pinion, you'd have 4.88 gears. 5.13 has to be a physically smaller pinion than 4.88 because of larger gear ratio.
