my big chilton truck repair 71 to 78 book says 2.625 (measuring to the factory set-up tool) but i aint got no factory set up tool!
the 2.625 dimension is correct, and is measured from the CL of the diff (and ring gear) to the head of the pinion. (no special tools required beyond the proper length straightedge / surface and a big enough depth micrometer. the chilton number is right)

I believe it is the number from where the pinion head would seat against the large pinion bearing. This method is sometimes used since some pinions do not have the face machined off smooth.
