I was told that the d50 that comes in the new super duty Ford has the same joint that the d60 has. Is this true?

So you have the strength at the outers and the clearance in the center........ is there something I'm missing here? Isn't this what a lot of the Jeeps guys are looking for? I'm not talking about the balls to the walls, full time off road rigs - more of the want strength for wheelin and have to drive it daily too.

Hey Ant

That was the reason for my original post. To find out if the d50 has the same outers as the d60. The joint is the weak link. I am told it has the larger joint. If you are not out of control with the stupid pedal that axle would do great. A straight d44 is not worth the time to me because it has the same 297x joint a d30 has.

The good part of it is that the d50 are soon to be a dime a dozen. At least here in Texas because the Super Duty Fords are everywhere. A friend of mine is hooking me up with a deal I can't refuse "free".

Find out what gears and lockers are available (I'm sure you are very limited) and if its all good, go for it. I can see your point. Its all about availability of parts for it to me.

3.73, 4.10, and 4.56 gears are available for the Dana 50. You can get an ARB also.

A friend of mine has this unit on his 2000 f-250. He showed me one of those new sealed bearing units, with discount it was $348. The first unit broke with 35 inch tires.

My neighbor has the same front end in his 2000 F250 with bone stock tires on it and it hatched at 20,000 miles. Not sure about reliability but if its cheap get it.

Randy's ring & pinion has 5.38 for the d50.

Hey PTO Dave what did your friend break and what was he doing? Breaking doesn't impress me you can break a d60 doing stupid things. Such as if someone in an F250 a very heavy truck compared to a jeep was pulling something or jerking to free something in reverse with foot firmly planted on the stupid pedal you can get ready for the fire works (snap crackle and pop). It would be true even for a d60 with the torque of that power stroke.

I don't suppose you could slip a D60 Carrier in there could you? How about D60 Spider gears? Even if you can't, you must be able to shave the heck out of it. It must have all kinds of internal clearance. True the weak point of it is the axle shafts, but it's still stronger than a D44. The earlier TTB D50 use the same u-joint don't they? Could you use those outers instead of the unit bearing outers? Just a thought.

Not really sure what kind of a stunt he was doing,he is kinda crazy. He broke the front last sunday(I think it was one of those cheesey hubs)Just seems kinda goofy to pay $348 bucks for one side when I can do both side wheel bearings on my 60 for about $100. Your right though a jeep is a LOT lighter and it depends on how you drive.

That is true Grandpa Jeep the d50 ring & pinion is stronger than a d44. I think you might be right about the clearance inside I will have to check into it. The outside of the pumkin looks to be exactly the same as the reverse d60 I have in the rear, if this is the case you should be able to do a pretty extreme shave on it.

There's something else about those unit bearing hubs that has me intrigued. Ford is using them with lockouts that are either vaccumn or manually operated right? Therefore they must have some sort of rotating seal right? I was thinking a guy could hook up an onboard air system to the tire through that hub, like the hummer does. That would be too cool to be able to air up or down from the cab. What do you think?

My hope is that there is a swap I can do, or that Warn will offer a manual locking hub. I don't think the auto lock hubs have ever been reliable.

I have a lot of research to do before I make a decision. I will let you know what I find. I have been looking for a reverse d60 in the salvage yards for over 2 months now with no luck and the d50 is looking pretty good for the price.
