When did the ford trucks change from the low spline count (13?) axle shafts to the high count ones? (31?) I recently aquired a 73 f250 rear, and was informed it would be weak due to low splines, but the shafts apear to be the high count ones, and identicle to the 78 that's under my truck now. Also, if anyone's interested, it's for sale. :) :)
Thanks ~ John

I was looking at one for my truck that came out of a mid 70's ford that was 16 spline. I asked around and I think it was 76 I was told was the last year for the 16 spline 60. I ended up getting one out of an early 70's chevy 3/4 ton that was 30 spline.

Hmmm....I wonder if they used 2 different rears? I know this truck was a "camper special" so that might be it. Or mabey I just mis read the gvw tag.

My buddy has a 70's (built from like 3 trucks) 4 door on 42's with 460 and runs the d60 rear 16 spline....and he gets on it.... never broke a shaft....he said IF he ever breaks a shaft he might swap....but if it works...leave it alone....

Turns out it's a 77 dana 61. 3.31 and 3.07 are automatically d61, and are heavier duty than a d60. I beilive the ratings are 4500 for the 60, and 5300 for the 61. BTW, anyone want this thing?
