With a 70 mile round trip to work, some of that has to be highway. The 5.3 Suburbans can get around 20 on the road.
With that being said I could sell the XJ if I got a Tahoe/Suburban.
I had a '99 tahoe as well as a '99 escalade. Both with the 5.7s. My commute is 36 miles of highway one way, every day. Neither of them ever got over 14.5 mpg over the 4 years of me driving them.
They sure were nice to drive but the mileage made me sell them.
I have one and he's right about the shit mileage. 12-13mpg if you put bigger tires on it.Lexus LX470 will get you everything except the MPG. It's a landcruiser under the skin and will run forever. Probably only going to get 15-16mpg though.
RE: Carseats in an XJ
If you remove the rear seat's back cushion, it makes the baby seats fit much better. The seat cover zips off and the foam just has a bit of spray glue holding it in place. Easy to do if you unbolt it first. Easy to undo once they grow out of the baby seats.
This allows you to put car seats in without having to push the front seats way forward.
Yup. We love the heck out of ours (2 kids in car seats right now). The 3rd row is great to use in a pinch, but you don't want to stuff a full sized adult back there for any length of time.
I figured as much.
