I myself have never owned a full carrier detroit locker (love my ARBs), but I saw this on another board:
The detroit is acting up really bad, its banging(ratcheting) about 15 times in the first mile the jeep is driven then quiets down to the way it normally drives.
If it helps it's for a D35c. Is this normal for Full carrier detroits? He never said how old the locker is, but maybe it's an install error, or just too many miles wearing it out? My brothers old lock-right used to act up at first, but then again it :nuke: after a couple months. Thoughts?

The only time I have heard of a Detroit Locker doing something like this was when the guy had different size tires.

Usually the ratching happens when cornering (differentiating) between tire rotation.

mine gives me a few bangs every once in a while but the newer soft lockers are unbelievable compared to original Detroit. With the old one I though I got rear ended in traffic a few times :flipoff2:

It's not normal. Is it an older one or newer soft locker? They're night and day different, but neither should perform like that. The new soft lockers are awesome and behave very nicely and quietly.

I have the soflocker in my d70 and barely even notice on the street. Like the others said, only in turns, when getting on it does it "act up"

Mine was doing it, it was because the teeth were sheared off inside the locker, it was also a D35c. It would just kick in and out while driving down the road. So I took it out and welded it, she won't be unlocking any more!

The teeth inside (can't see it in this pic, but helps you get an idea) near where I have my finger is what went out, they say it's typically the cause of snapping an axle, the sudden break and torque shears off the teeth.

If this is whats wrong with yours the parts are astronomically high, not too much short of buying a new locker.

But this only happens within the first mile of driving. Wouldn't it do it all the time if it were any of the reasons above? That's the part I don't get.....??? My brother was thinking of buying the axle from the guy if it was something that could be easily fixed.
