I have an old '75 GMC dually with an 8.1 and Gearstar 4L80E (stage II).

I towed a 10000lbs dozer on my GN about 4 miles up a very steep dirt road and actually ran out of power and had to be pulled via tow strap by another truck to the top. I tried to nurse it as much as I could. I had the gearstar tranny cooler and fans running the entire time. Once I was at the top I went another mile down hill and parked it overnight. Next day unloaded the dozer and drove it a few hundred yards and it has sat ever since. Seemed fine then.

Fluid smells fine and is not low. I think it overheated to the point where it was coming out the top of the tranny breather.

This was at night at about 50 degrees.

Think I damaged the Gearstar 4L80E?

Trans fluid will discolor with heat (red > brown > black), if it's still bright Kool-Aid red it's probably ok.

Clarify "ran out of power"?

Did your engine overheat?

You sure your trans wasn't over full?

I've read that 240*F is the beginnings of overheating a trans.
