i have heard that there is a cruiser transmission that will bolt up between a 2.2 liter 1981 diesel 2wd toyota pickup motor and a 1981 pick up truck t-case.

this isn't a cruiser application but i thought i'd ask here because you guys know your cruiser tech.

True, actually two of them, a 4-speed manual and a 5-speed manual. Both of these transmissions appeared in the LJ70, a light-duty Land Cruiser never available in the US or Canada. Best bet is Europe, which saw most of the light-duty market.

The light duty LJ70 unit is the same transmission that is used in the Turbo Mini truck, R151F, you'll need a new bellhousing from toyota to bolt it to the diesel. The tranny is considered a medium duty unit... the light duty items are the W and G series, HD being the H4x/H55/H151.
