Picked up one from Gearman and two from a junkyard, noticed that two have much thicker flanges than the one from Gearman. One of the thick-flanged ones is drilled for an ABS sensor at the top, while the other has the same casting but isn't drilled.

Guessing the thicker ones are from newer rigs? But still take the same bearings and gears?

Thicker flange: .410" vs .554"

Looks the same otherwise, has the exact same bolt pattern.

Check it out, the newer one doesn't have the slots to make punching out the bearing race easier.

V6's before 1995 with ABS had the sensors on the rear diff. In 1995, they went to a sensor on the ends of the axle tubes (and 4-wheel ABS). That's the way it was for 4Runners anyway. I assume it was similar for pickups.

I wonder how much stronger they are than the earlier V6 housings? I'll have to measure the main casting thickness to see if that's thicker too.

There is a certain Tacoma variant that looks like a V6, but internals are different. Difference is in the bearings and 210mm ring instead of std. 8", not a big difference in measurement, but bearings are not the same. If you didnt pull this out of a truck yourself, this might be the answer. If you saw the rig & it wasnt a Taco, I dont know what to tell you. All of the 8" V6 were the heavier flange/pinion area castings that I've seen, & about 15-17# heavier.

Did they have the gears in them? They could be the housings with the factory 4:88's and those housings are different.

Maybe, maybe, I'm passing up a lot of fun weekends out of town to get this banged out! Almost have the axle housing prepped, am starting to trim the diff Geiger-style tomorrow.

I still don't have much on this but a buddie with a 91? truck went to throw in 5.71's in a 6 with abs and was told that with the ABS he could only go like 4.56 so he threw in a 4 instead. Any input on this? I don't think it is a housing thing? Good pix BTW

Probably thicker ring gear interference with the ABS sensor, without the sensor you could probably run any gear.
