A friend from another town just bought herself a 1974 CJ 5 and would like me to put a disc brake conversion on it. Questions I have are..... What axles came under a CJ 5 in 1974 and where should I look for a conversion setup? I haven't been able to get over to her to see what axles are under it myself. If I do.... What will tell me what axle they are?

Thank you.
Is there something on the axles to confirm that they haven't been changed?

Easiest source for a disc conversion is to find somebody selling or parting out a 77+ CJ axle with discs. Swap everything from the balljoints out. You may also elect to retain your drum hubs with the stronger 6-bolt lockouts, in most cases these are a direct swap (just get longer studs to press on the rotor).

Once the axle side is done, swap in a '76-78 or so CJ w/ manual disc brake master cylinder, since the drum brake MC won't push enough fluid to clamp the discs well at all.

In the interest of full disclosure, I happen to be parting out a mid-80's CJ axle.

I've researching this and here is what I've come up with so far. Would appreaitate any info or corrections. Going to the Salvage yard on Saturday. Not interest in going to a Dana 44 at this time, I have an ARB in my Dana 30 now.
Three ways to go:
1.) Buy a custon kits, $800 to $1100 Way too much for my budget.
2.) find a Dana 30 with disc brakes and swap all the parts.
Not sure what Vehicles to look at, CJ's and ???
3.) Build from GM & CJ parts from Salvage yards.
Calipers
1971-78 Chev or GMC ½ ton or light duty ¾ ton 4x4 w/Dana 44
Caliper brackets (6 bolt)
1973-91 ½ ton Chevy 4x4
1970-86 GM ½ ton 4x4
1974-78 Blazer or Jimmy
Jeep or IH Dana 30’s w/six bolts
Jeep Waggoneers ? What years?
Spindles (disc brakes)
1977-86 CJ
1972-76 ½ GM,
Hubs (disc brakes or have drum hubs milled)
1976-81CJ
Rotors 11.75” x 1.20”
1977-78 CJ (1 1/8” thick)
Master Cylinder (prefer lines on passenger side)
CJ or waggie with disc/drums
1972-76 ‘A’ GM Cars (ElCamino,Nova,Firebird,etc w/disc-drum setup)
Proportioning Valve
1976+ GM (any Drum-Disc Vehicle)
Wheel Studs 10 ea (longer) ½” x 20 TPI x ???
Dorman pn 610106

Questions I'm still looking at:
1.) What year Waggies work. Reason I ask, I know where a 1980 wagie is sitting but has driver side drop. Is it different that pre-1980's with driverside drop?
2.) The GM donors are all Dana 44's?
3.) Dust Shields & backing plates?
4.) What vehieles had Dana 30's with disc that swap to my '73 dana 30? CJ's 1976 to ???, Waggies ??? FSJ???

Thanks for any & all help.
Rock On!

The Waggie Dana 44 will have 6 bolt wheels, so by itself it will not have all you need. The easiest solution is to find a 1977-1986 CJ and swap ball joints out over to your axle. Some 1976 CJ has discs, too, but it was an option. You really want a 1980 or older CJ if possible due to the stronger 6 bolt hub that accepts premium lockouts. Warn doesn't make a premium lockout for the 5 bolt hub in the 1981 or newer axle.

I just swapped in front disc's on my 75. After researching and looking for the needed JY parts, I decided to buy a kit from R&P 4 wd.. Was on sale at the time. Has all the parts you need, and good instructions.. It included new bearings etc.. I live in the stix so not much JY stuff available.. Besides my time is worth something..
