I have shamed my father. He owns a tricked out cj-7 with a 350. I called him a few months ago to tell him that I purchased a 74 fj40 with no rust, straight body, 90k, and warn winch for 2000. He laughed. But, I had a jeep jeepster, and the tlc kicks the crap out of it in every way. Driving up to go wheeling with the old man tomorrow, hopefully humiliate him and his jeep. The question I have is about a disc brake conversion. I am already sick of the drum brakes and lack of power steering, but I am going to upgrade the brakes first. I would like some feedback on the minitruck conversion versus the man-a-fre disc conversion kit. The minitruck is much more in my price range, but I would like to hear from someone who has the kit conversion. By the way, I am a newbie too, have been reading the tlc bulletin since before I got my cruiser and haven't been back to the jeep board since. I have seen the error of my ways, only cruisers from now on.

First off - welcome newbie

Now to your cruiser. Go with the mini truck discs. Way better and cheaper. The MAF bolt on kit has very nice parts, but you still have the weaker/course splined birfs. Better yet - find the parts from a FJ60 for the conversion - then you get vented rotors and calipers designed to stop a HEAVY wagon. I paid $300 for the entire front end of a wrecked FJ60, and knew little to nothing about wrenching when I did my first disc conversion. It's also a good way to learn/practice how to change a birfield - especially if you are a little heavy on the "skinny pedal"

Stay away from that high dollar kit and good luck on your conversion.

Welcome newbie Oh and one for all you other newbies too.

You shouldn't think of it as showing him up. After all this is your father you're speaking in reference to. Rather, politely demonstrate the awesome capabilities of your new found girl!

i just put on a '76 disc front axle and its great, basically the same thing as the fj60 front end, except the fj60 front has stronger birfs...i was going to do the MAF kit, but held off due to price and lack of money, i spent half the price of the MAF kit and have a rebuilt, disc front end...i havent done a mini truck disc swap, but it can't be much different from putting my axle back together and that was a breeze..i'd say go w/ the mini truck discs, i havent heard anything but good things about them! and their cheap!

congradulations on the 40, i hope you didn't like any jeeps before the cruiser, because you will never go back...in no time you will want to buy another and another, and soon enough, you will be a true cruiserhead and think fj55's are good looking

Don't even bother w/the MAF kit. I would be
more concerned w/getting bigger birfields
from the minitruck. You will need to get
your knuckle arms rewelded & reamed out to
accept the LC tie rod. Wardens in Placerville
can offer that service (530)-622-9242. Oh yeah, fellow noobie, I almost forgot

Another one see's the light. I to, along time ago owned a Heep, it was a good rig, but compared to my cruzah, its like night and day!
Stay away from the manafre kit, do the mini swap.
Power steering, IMHO is one of the best mods to do. The stock TLC steering just plain sucks, and can be dangerous... When I did my mods I did everything at once, P/S, S/R, SOA, V-8, SM465, NP205, centered rear toy V-6 diff, Blah, blah,blah... This winter the process starts all over again..
