Thanks eric,

I adjusted the title of the post to stress axleSHAFTS. (easily overlooked)

What I'm getting at here is the cheapest 8 lug rearend to shorten and lockup that has 35 spline axles.

14 bolt FF 35 spline:
It appears that the 14 bolt axleshafts cannot be shortened because the splines are rolled onto them when they are made (i.e. splines are raised above the axle).
That means that new shafts would be needed = $300.
I was looking into using Dana 70 axle shafts in a 14 bolt because I was told that the dana 70 shafts can be shortened (splines are cut into the shaft...not rolled).
But this won't work if the Dana 70 axle shaft bolt pattern is different than the GM 14 FF axle shaft bolt pattern.

35 Spline Dana 60 Full Floater:
Good luck finding one

However, I did find one w/ a 1.56" ID spindle, but it had 30 spline axles in it so I would have to buy new axle shafts and side gears= $350.
This one may be cheaper if the Dana 70 and Dana 60 had the same axle shaft bolt pattern. If yes, then I could get some 70 shafts and have them shortened.

35 Spline Dana 60 SEMI Floater:
I already have a dana 60. All I would need are the axles, side gears, bearings, retainer plates = $400-500.
Oh yah, and brakes would have to be obtained (disk brakes most likely would be the only option=$$$???.)

Dana 70 35 Spline FF:
Looks like this might be the cheapest to shorten, provided the axle shafts can actually be resplined.

For lockers, the GM 14 bolt detroit is only $300 <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0">
The detroits for Dana 60 and 70 are roughly $500 <IMG SRC="smilies/crybaby2.gif" border="0">

or.....$1 in welding rods <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

To shorten any of these housings would be about $200 done locally.

The D70 35 spline shafts that I have seen also taper down towards the axle flange so you can't really cut too much off of them. There may be other D70 shafts that do not taper, but I have not seen them.
