Does anyone know anything about winches?

1938 Views 36 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Axle Rose
My warn winch is very old and I want to replace it with a new one. I watched a video on YouTube recently, but I still haven't figured out what winch to buy. I want to buy a cheap and easy-to-use winch. I recently saw this video, does anyone know how about the winch of the open road brand? he looks really cheap

If someone who knows this brand of winch can introduce it to me

Thank you in advance

What's wrong with the old Warn? You may be able to service it....some of their old stuff is pretty good.

That said, how cheap are you trying to go? Warn's been running their Chinese produced VR series for $650 for a 12K. Superwinch has been running similar pricing (when either is on sale) for their China produced lines. Not sure they are any better than the no-name Chinese ones though tbh.

How much for your old warn?
I always tell people to skip the Chinese winches, and buy an old warn. Parts are widely available and they are easy to rebuild. I bought this for 400 bucks. Works fine and I only had to change the clocking because it was on a multi mount.

I dislike cheap Chinese winches because they don’t work when you absolutely need them to. Especially if you wheel alone, you need a working winch every time.

Get one with synthetic rope.
Only if he plans on actually using it. And keeping Int covered.

What do you define as cheap? $400? $600? $800? I just bought a smittybilt gen 2 9500 for $350 and expect it to work well for me. I wheel alone, but I have enough supplies (come along, jacks, etc) to get out of almost any hole without a winch, it’ll just take time.

I chose smittybilt over badlands because of a longer warranty and higher waterproof rating for the same price. I would say get synthetic line if weight is important, but it will be ~$200 more expensive for synthetic compared to wire.
I have the 12K badlands. I bought it primarily as as a trailer winch, but I have a hitch basket for it and have used it on various trucks. It's never let me down, but I'm not a serious wheeler and haven't really ever put it in a situation where it was mission critical.

The only other winch I personally have experience with is the ramsey 8k hydraulic on my rollback.

I'm sure the warns are absolutely as good as everyone says they are, but the guys who advocate for them really want you to know they didn't overspend on them.
I have a (very) old Warn M8000 that I paid $300 for. Been on the front of my XJ for a few years. Has always been there for me when I needed it.

I paid $400 (or $450) for my Warn.
My first 8274 cost me $150 and it came with a bumper.
My first warn 12k was $450, still have it and 2 more, it was also the most ive paid for any winch.
I paid $200 for my latest 8274 and $150 for the ?8700?
$150 for the ramsey worm drive
$150 for the total half breed bastard pto braden with a elec motor.
I’ve had a hard time finding a old warn or Ramsey or anything in working condition for under $500. And even the broken ones, or ones that come without wire are still $300+ around me.

That’s the only reason I went and bought a new smittybilt. I didn’t want to have to buy, then fix a winch, just to end up $400 into a 30 year old winch. If I would’ve found a working warn for $150 I would’ve picked it up in a heartbeat!
