Perfect, not to clutter up the picture thread. I'll go back there after the trip!

Any Communications recommendations? I figure there is no service on the trail. Ham repeaters? Or spot phones?

Also I take it difficulty varies year to year depending on snow? We have a guy who's tentative and he's open/limited slip ZJ on 35s but we can get a locker up front if necessary.

Awesome! I'm excited. Last year we left 3 days for the rubicon finished in 2 and hit the beginning of fordyce the other day. Goal is to have fun take our time if we finish early we finish early if we finish late that's ok too.

My hummer is the baby one (most similar to the JK size) do you know if any groups are going to be out there during our trip?

Or communication recommendations? I have a HAM not sure if there is a common repeater that is used for 4 wheelers in the area. Or better off getting a spot phone in case of an issue
I know of some mid August groups. I have also seen/heard of a few early August groups, but don't remember who they are.

There are ham repeaters. I don't have a license, so I havn't really paid attention to the numbers. I will try to remember where I saw the info.

There are some sections of the North half of the trail where you can get cell phone service, nothing in the South half. Even sat phones don't work too well in the South half.

They won't open the trail until all the snow is gone. Or did you mean heavy snow years cause more erosion, etc, so it's worse even after the snow is gone? I don't think it makes a huge difference either way. I think it's more about how much traffic the trail gets, and some years are just different.

Some rigs like your friends ZJ go through, depends on how much you want to help him, or wait for him to winch. Of course driving skills are a big part of it too.

Ok I'll look into the repeaters. For my buddy we have done plenty of stuff where people say you can't, we just take our time use a winch if necessary. Wasn't sure if it was even doable.

As for opening date do you think it's expected to open August 1st based on what u saw at the north end? I wasn't sure if the dusy is subject to a lot of change year to year...I know we tried to run the rubicon as early as possible and especially before the jeep jamborees when they basically pave it and make it too easy but that doesn't sound like the case

I don't know you, and your buddies skill level. From experience I know people can use the same words to describe their comfort level and abilities, yet some be twice as fast as others. You might want to look at it first. From what I saw I don't see any reason it won't open on time. Nobody paves the Dusy, it's too much trail, too few people. A few spots get rocks stacked.

My Dad did the trail in a Cherokee on 31's and 2 open diffs. It can be done. He really did not have that much trouble. I think I only tugged him a couple of times.

I skipped last year so I'll hopefully be at the head of the line when they open the gate this year. Thanks for the thread be sure to post the tentative opening date. I hoping to see some snow drifts this year. :beer:

I walked through the Swamp Lake trail last week, snow was on the north side of the two ridges only. I don't expect any to be on Dusy Ershim when it opens.

Mountainguyed are there normally a "no fire" rule in place around August?

No fires until further notice, they're already writing tickets. It's only been normal the last few years, because of the drought. The only legal place to have campfires on Dusy Ershim is Voyager Rock Campground, the only thing legal on the rest of the trail is a propane type device you can turn off with a valve. My son and I just walked through the trail, days are really nice, nights are cold. Tuesday morning we had frost near Summit Lake, went swimming later the same day. Refreshing. Mosquitoes are pretty bad. The only snow left was in the shade near Mallard Lake. Courtright was busy, even on a Thursday.

Center of the trail is generally believed to be East Lake. Even if you're at east Lake it can be better to go out to Courtright, if the lake is down. Then you can take off 4.5 miles of trail by running the lake bottom. You have to do Thompson Hill, but you don't have to do Gatekeeper. It's kind of a toss up, but I'd probably go out to Courtright.

I heard from the OHV Manager, Dusy is expected to open on time August 1st. This is upon review of the walk through report I gave him, and crew ready to go in.

Most do their last fill up at the station in Shaver Lake. Pass Dinkey Creek road, get gas, then come back to Dinkey Creek road. You don't want to put in more gas than you have to there, costs too much. Fill up on your way through Fresno. There is also a small above ground tank at Dinkey Creek store, twelve miles after Shaver Lake. Costs even more there, but good to know just in case. When you get out the other end you can go to the station at Huntington Lake if you have to, or back to Shaver Lake.

I went through the trail with the club that maintains Ershim Campgound, got back yesterday. The trail is already open. Two quads passed us a couple miles before Courtright, and three Jeeps were at Courtright getting ready to go in today. Weather was warmer than a couple weeks earlier on our walk through. Mosquitoes are still on the bad side.
