dyno'd my PSD today

the northwest powerstroker's had there quarterly dyno run today, i managed to lay down a humble 303hp and 647ft/lb of tq at the rear wheels

withe 3.73 gears, 315/75/16 tires on winterblend fuel

i've got a 100hp diablo sport chip installed now, and towed a 72 chevy pickup about 60 miles with it in yesterday, and never had EGT reading's over 800, and that was burying my foot in it for extended times

i know it's getting plenty of fuel, she blows enough black smoke to be in a james bond flick

i've got the VDH series computer and htey're know for running cooler than alot of others

I'd still own a diesel over a gasser if you're going to tow. I never have to slow down on the hills and always pass cars going uphill while I'm towing. 324 HP at the rear wheels (confirmed with dyno run) is what I drive everyday on the lowest power setting. I'm not crazy like that *******, Gunracer1.

In my opinion the entire arguement is crazy. Even if you drive 25,000 miles a year, you are only going to save appx $900 dollars a year in fuel, and if you are buying a 40,000 vehicle, why even worry. You can get that back in resale. Therefore it becomes a question of preference. And by the way, for $4000 in mods you could have almost 500 horses at the rear wheels on a cummins, reliably.

Read the thread from the start. There is more to consider than the cost of fuel. Oh, and get a FORD!

I bought the PSD because of the range, not a low cost per mile.

DSI, it took 10K for your mileage to go up? I heard it was about 5K. But since I've past that mark, I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer...

Lots of factors involved. How much you have been towing, the motor you got(some are just tighter than others), the weight you tow (how hard your working the motor). My brothers truck was broke in at 3000 miles. But he tows 5500 pounds every day all day long.

My Cummins did not "loosen" up until about 20K miles. The best way to break in a diesel rig is to tow something heavy. You need to produce heat to break in the rings.

MattS shot me a link a few days ago to some guy with a new Dodge diesel who was getting like 7.3 avg. over a rather lengthy towing trip with a gooseneck and fullsize truck on the trailer... Ouch

I towed my 28 foot gooseneck (4850 #'s) with a 3800 # car on it 150 miles this weekend and got 13.6 mpg. But I'm only getting about 15.5 daily driving. But some people are getting in the low 20's with less miles that me.

My buddy with a 2000 CTD with over 220,000 miles is getting 23 mpg on his daily commute to work.

I can't figure out why the number are all over the place.

Lots of variables such as driving styles, level of bombing, and how much and how fast you tow. I've seen posts on the ford's web site about the PSD guys complaining about lousy mileage too.

lol - I thought *all* you diesel guys were getting like 30 mpg?

The wide range of mpg reports doesn't surprise me - in my informal requests over the years diesel mileage seems to be ALL over the place... from good, to MISERABLE...

I don't remember anyone saying we get 30 mpg. We do get better mileage while towing and can tow without having to slow down on hills/mountains.

Sarcasm might as well be a pretty flower on the east slopes of a Tibetan mountain as far as you are concerned, am I right?

No sarcasm. I towed my FJ40 to Tellico on I40 (going east) though Little Rock, AR. I was able to tow up the hills in Tenn. at 85 mph passing all of the trucks and cars. I got 12 to 14 mpg when I did this.

Guess that's why then, the only thing I've been towing is my fat ass. I'm getting the stuff together to flat tow the Heep, so I guess that will help a bit more.
