I was under the impression that there was several differnt ECU's. One for the Turbo's and atleast 2 for the fuel injected models due to the plenum change. but I'm not positive on this.

turbo is different
91-on is different

88-90 used a different impedance injector than the previous generation. I know the connectors are different, I suspect the injector coil and ECU is different, as well.

From my recent experiences in ECU's 86-87 are changeable, 85 and lower are interchangeable, 88' is all by itself as this is when the injectors were switched over to the hole type from pintle and require a different electrical current. 89-early 92' are swappable and then late 92-95. 4Crawler has used a newer ECU in his 85' without any ill-effects or change in performance. So this could be a varied answer depending on technical vs. real world experiences.

Thats what Esquire812 @ 4x4wire said when I had the same question a while back

I started to track the different part numbers of ECU's and what they were out of but never got any more input for them:

89661-33070 = unknown
89661-35020 = 85 Std 22RE, 5 speed, w. A/C, Cruise
89661-35050 = 86 Std, sb, 22RET, 5 spd, Non-SR5, No A/C, No Cruise
89661-35050 = 86 22RET Auto, w. A/C
89661-35070 = 86 Std 22RE, 5 speed, no A/C, no Cruise
89661-35070 = 86 4Run, 22REC, 5 spd, SR5, w. A/C, w. Cruise
89661-35110 = 88 Std, sb, 22RE, 5 spd, Non-SR5 No A/C, No cruise

Xtra = extra cab
Std = standard cab
4Run = 4 Runner
SB = short bed
LB = long bed

" 89661-35070 "== Verified I just got this out of a 86 5-spd. non SR5 4 runner
hoping it will work as a spare for my 85 4runner
