I have an AMC 360 with a edelbrock intake. I have to carbs.....an ok edelbrock and a rebuilt motorcraft from a 1978 wagoneer. Would the motorcraft go in the edelbrock intake? Does this carb. have smog stuff and if it does what should I do with it? Which carb. should I use or do I have to use the edelbrock carb.?

The 2100 will fit the edelbrock intake, but it will require an adapter, which I think can be purchased from Summit or Jegs, unless you've got any machinist friends that can make you one. I am not terribly sure what emmissions stuff would be on a cicra 1978 mc2100 carb.

The Edelbrock carb that you have can be rebuilt for dirt cheap, and you will probably like the performance gained from that carb. The only big drawback with the edelbrock carb is that it does not behave well offroad on steep angles and such.

I am running an AMC 360 with a Motorcraft 2 bbl. Set the float nice and low, installed an overhaul kit from a mid 70's 400 LTD(emissions era), and have never had any problems at all. It is the stock carb from the 360 (81 J20) and is currently on a stock intake.

I have had some wheeling buddies try Edelbrock's, Holley's, and all of the others, but they somehow end up with a Motorcraft.

I could use the added power from a good 4 bbl, but don't want to spend the $$$ on a Truck Avenger right now. My 360 is mildly built with an RV cam and 0.040" overbore, stock everything else if that helps any.

They used 4bbl Motorcrafts too.
It's hard to tell from the original post, but it sounds like cornejocalpoly may be choosing between a 4bbl Edelbrock, & a 4bbl Motorcraft.

I think the designations for the 4bbl versions are 4300, and 4350 (it's been a long time since I messed with one).
The 4300 is a square patturn 4bbl, that should interchange with your Edelbrock (Carter style) carb.
The 4350 (my 77' 401 had one), is a spread bore carb, and won't interchange with a square bore intake.

It's easy to figure out which one you have, the square bore has 4 equal sized throttle bores.
The spread bore has 2 small primaries, and 2 large secondaries (though not as dramatically different as a Q-jet carb).

These carbs are similar to the 2bbl versions, but I don't know if they work as well off road as the 2bbl Motorcrafts are know to.

The adapter is actually hard to find. You certainly can't just find one on the shelf at most auto parts stores.

The Quadrajet to squarebore adapter will not work. The bores on the carburetor dont' match up.

If you have a parts store with someone behind the counter that actually knows what they're doing, you can have them help you find the right adapter. Otherwise a call to summit or jegs may be needed.

If you go over to www.ifsja.org you may be able to find a stock 4bbl manifold for sale. That would let you bolt the carb right up.

I wasn't even aware you could get a Ford spreadbore adapter.

If it's a decent piece, I'd rather use an adapter + aftermarket intake, than to swap back to a stock cast iron low rise one.

Does anyone know how a Carter/Edelbrock carb compares to a Motorcraft 4bbl in off camber stuff?
Is the swap even worth it?

I've run MC 4bbls, but never in a trail rig.

I can't remember if I even ever ran the stock intake/spread bore Motorcraft (I did the 401 swap back in 1988). I think I switched to a Torker/square bore Holley right away (for a street car, not a 4x4).

The Motorcraft blows the Carter/Edelbrock out of the water. I've seen 4bbl Motorcraft equipped Wagoneers do all sorts of crazy angles with nary a sputter. I've seen Edelbrock equipped rigs cough and die on easy trails.

Agreed. I ran the 4350 for almost 2 years and it worked well enough on inclines, declines and side hills. It's downfall was when things got too bumpy. I run a quadrajet now and I gotta say it's one of the best upgrades I've put on my waggy.

I ran a Thermo Quad on the 360 in my fsj for several years. It was way better than the Holley or the AFB on the SP2P manifold. I used a square to spread bore adapter and had to jury rig the choke but otherwise was a good setup for me.

i had an edelbrock on my old 78 for about two weeks and it was the worst pos off road that i have ever seen. it ran like a champ on the road, but would sputter and die if it saw a large pebble. i just put a q-jet on my new 360 that went in yesterday. it is supposed to be poor mans injection so we'll see how it does. if you can find a quadrajet that is in good shape they are supposed to work the best, for some reason you are supposed to mount them backwards too. i'm still trying to figure out how to do my linkage :D oh well, guess i need to get the rest of the crap in there before i have to worry too much about that.
