About 11pm last night, I got as far as Wilshire and Fairfax before it died. It coughed, sputtered, surged and back-fired several times. I thought it was outta gas. I walked over to Fairfax and Olympic and bought a can and a Gallon of 87oct. Walked back, poured it in. It wasn't out of gas, but in the dark with no guage, the only way to tell is to listen for the splashes. So I jump in, it fires up and I drive over to Olympic and proces to go home. Get about 3 Blocks it happens again. Now I know it's not fuel. So I open the hood and feel for heat. The motor really isn't too hot, and surely cooler than the YJ runs so I rule that out. I check the Oil, plenty and clean, so I rule that out. Jump in the Jeep and it fires right up. Drive about 3 blocks and it happens again. This time I'm starting to get pissed. Open the hood and check all the power connectors (nice and simple wiring) everything seems fine. Jump in, fire it up and it's great for another 3 or 4 blocks, then it dies. This time, I jump out, set the choke to about halfway. Get it, fire it up and drive the last 3 blocks home. Grrrr.

Motor is the L-Head 134, solex Carb, 12volt conversion.

Any Ideas?

Fuel filter? or filters.

You may have changed one but maybe some one placed one somewhere else as well and it hasn't been changed in a while

I'm not familiar with CJ2a's but I had a buddy with a problem like that and his problem was the fuel pump. It was pretty much shot and it was very intermittent. Just a thought

I know it isn't clogged (Fuel Filter) in that I Replaced all of the Steel Line with fuel rubber hose, and that way I know there is only one, and it is in teh Glass Bowl designed pump. Hmmm. Maybe the Pump IS bad. Any other ideas?

OK, for something a little different, could be the coil. Are you running a ballast resistor? Most coils shouln't get 12v all the time, only on start. It will work for a while on 12v all the time, then start acting as you describe.

Regarding the fuel pump, the diaphragm can go bad in those old pumps and leak fuel into the block, contaminating and thinning your oil.
Just a FYI, since you're going to be looking around there anyway...

My 66 would do this and it turned out to be a small piece of "something" in the tank and it would cover the fuel outlet hole. When the motor would die the draw of the pump would stop and then the piece would then be moved away by the gas moveing in the tank. My problem was far more intermitent than yours though.
