Is the 4.3L weight listed there the vortec? I thought the Vortec was lighter...Did they specify how complete the engine was a weigh-in (i.e. accessories, smog gear, injected or carb'd) or if was block weight only ?

Cool list...

Who runs a Mazda Rotary? I know there was a buggy way back when that had one, but I onyl ever saw one pic of it and I don't think it ever made it to a comp.

I've contemplated running a rotary several times since I have one sitting in my garage. They've got a lot of goods and one major bad.

Goods:

Small, completely assembled they would fit in the tranny tunnel of most trucks

Relatively light, I think that figure is a bit high, or is for a complete motor, because I can pick mine up and over a fender fairly easily and I'm not a big guy

Power, in stock form they're good for 200hp, and with a turbo they run 250. Also easily buildable to upwards of 700hp.

Bad:

they are VERY rev happy. They can be modified to RPMs of over 10k. All of their power is high up, with no major off the line torque. My Uncle is putting one into his MGB, which is a good lightweight application for this motor. However, I think in a buggy you would find it too rev happy.

One more thing, you'd have to adapt a tranny to it, or use a divorced case. Although the stock Mazda turbo tranny is pretty bulletproof. HTH

I was working on an Audi A6 this last week, with a V-6, 5 valves per cylinder, anyone know anything about this engine, it was a 99 A6. It was aluminium block and heads, felt like it had good power..

ANyone know the weight of a 4.0 toyota/lexus V-8? Its 32 valve and makes 250-300hp, and 260-290lb/ft torque (I think the torque is great for a small motor)

Russ Hogan from I think Disney OK. , run a rotary engine in his buggy and competed in a few Prorock events in 2002. That thing would turn some insane amount of rpm's , then fill the whole comp area with smoke .

Rover V8, 320lbs... hey I'm putting one of those in my rig :D Mine is a 1989 3.9L EFI version and makes about 185hp and 260ft lbs stock... But of course I'm going to play with it a little and go for 220hp and 300 ft lbs ;) (easily achievable)

Before getting too hung up on weight alone, consider the weights location.

A motor that has a wide base like a VW sometimes is a pain when it comes to control arms vs. a FWD 3.8l gm which is very narrow in the block but has a lot more weight up high.

As you can tell, I've found a few problems putting the new buggy together.

Also after driving the VW again vs the 3.8L, I remember again why it was I said I needed all that power.

Horse power at idle should be a major concern for rock crawling. That's the easy way around the course.

With that in mind, let me say for the record......LS1 or nothing.

Now Scott is not the only one, I have one I am putting in a buggy. I was going to run a honda but this just worked out better. Now I am just worried about lack of power.
