what do you guys run on your 22Rs to make them sound good = deep and mellow, no pop pop poping, not loud. I just had a guy put exhaust on my truck today and he ran 13/4,no cat, 30" glass pack. it is loud and pops on decel. He said he would work on it more tomorrow and try to make it work like i want it to. But I dont know what to have him do. I was thinking i might have to put a cat on it to wellow it out. any ideas?

i have a 2.5 or 2.25 inch exhaust on mine.

no cat. i put a high flow muffler that is used on a v8. it sounds sweet. deep and loud only when you really step one it. its a really short pipe too. i put the muffler right under the cab where the cat was. then ran about another foot with a down elbow to exit the nasty fumes away from the inside. i didn't loss any low power and its alot more powerful and fast.

I like the Dynomax "Hemi" muffler.. It's quieter than the 2 chamber flowmaster I had. I prefer to be able to hear my sterio without exhaust noise.

How are you going to get this thing smogged without a "Cat"? Glas-Packs are known for there "Raspy" sound.

I know a guy running a crane cam in an otherwise stock 22RE, no cat, flowmaster (don't know what size, how many chamber), 5.29s. I'm not positive, but I think he as a header on it as well.

It sound like an 8-cylinder (People ask him if it has a 350 in it) with a mellow Gibson exhaust or something until he stands on it, then it gets loud... sounds like a riceburner bike with a much lower pitch. Very distinctive, but may not be your taste...

Plus I don't think you have a cam or header.

Just thought I'd let you know what you might expect with that setup. Maybe it won't help, but it can't hurt to know.

I don't have the 22 engine, but the V6. I run the Magnaflow muffler with a cat, and 2.25" pipe from the cat back, and it sounds awesome.
Low tone, nice rumble, but not raspy.
It sounds almost like a V8.
I'm sure it sounds good on the 22 engines too.

If you wanna hear it, I have some MPG's of the sound on my Video page.
The vids don't do the sound justice though, it sounds way better in person.

I don't think there's anything you can do to a 4banger to make it sound "like" a V8. My friend had an 86 with a gutted cat and 2chamber flowmaster with 2.25" pipe and it still sounded like a 4banger. Lower and raspier, but 4banger none the less.
As for the glasspacks, save those for a "true" V8, not a yota engine. Even my big block with dual glasspacks doesn't sound good in my opinion, and it's just my opinion at that. Go with flows or dynomax or whatever, but use a 2.25 or 2.5" pipe that will give you the "resonance" you're looking for. No chrome tips either!!!

use 2" pipe from the manifold back with a rhino performance muffler with dual tail pipes
dual big pipes is the only way to go!!!!!!!

today I spent from 9am to 2pm down at the shop waiting for the guy to work on my truck again. He cut the hole system off again and put 2.25 from the y pipe back to a dynamax turbo and ran back a few more feet and put another one on and then more 2.25 on out the back. it is only alittle lowder than stock, but its deaper and I like it. It almost feels less powerful than it did before though. Is it possible to lose power with that much volium?

are you running 2 mufflers if so thats your power loss problem. Also where did you lose the power? some people experiance a little less low end when the exhaust is changed but thats only a slight chance. i still can't beleive the size of exhaust every one runs with 4cyl, I'm gettin all kinds of crap from people for running 3" with my v-6 swap and my motor is almost twice as big as all of yours!

Here is a good chart to go by for pipe diameter. It's from Dynomax's site.

According to the chart, my 150 HP V6 should use 2.25" tubing, which is what I'm runnering.
If you go to big, you lose low end torque, but gain top end. I would think for a rig that see's a lot of rock crawling with either a 22RE, or a 3.1 V6 should not go over 2.25" tube to keep the low end torque curve where it should be.
