Okay,
now, I broke the extension housing on my np231 the other day and had to pull my shaft at the slip yoke and drive home for 2 minutes in 4wd (front wheels only).

I replaced the rearmost ujoint and straps along with the extansion housing but when i went to put the slip yoke back in it wouldn't go...i tried and tried to no avail.
so i pulled the new extension housing and cleaned up my messy seal...
to get the driveshaft back in i had to put it into the extansion housing while it was off the jeep then thread it on to the output shaft and bolt up the new housing again.
i don't know what was stopping it from going on
it looked to me like the output shaft might be bent.
so i added all my fluid and went for a drive
everything seemed fine at first but once i got on the hiway my jeep started to shake.
not too shaky...something like what you would expect from a ujoint that has just decided to crap out.
on down shift it got even worse.
shakier!
I got home and checked the u-joints and it was nice and solid.
I am just about to add more fluid since the drive but am completely at a loss of wheat may be happening to my jeep and what is causing this.

the shakes don't seem bad enough to me to be a bent main/output shaft...
any ideas?
anyone have any experince?

does the little metal bushing in there need time to 'wear in'?
does the oil seal need to be worn in?
Is it that my drive shaft is outta balance now cuz i drove without it and it's unbalanced?

If it is the main shaft I don't think I'm all that qualified to pull the t-case apart so it's gonna cost me big bucks.

thanks
RJ

It sounds like nothing has happened to your driveshaft since taking it out won't do anything to it. My guess would be that the mainshaft is bent. What were you doing that caused the tailshaft to break? My advice would be to go with a SYE kit that includes a new mainshaft. Chances are that with a SYE you would eliminate all possible sources of vibration as long as the shaft is balanced and the u-joints are good.

I was driving at 100km/h
<IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

broken u-joint that i neglected to replaced
vibes were so bad that it backed the straps off the pinion
as i took my foot off the gas there was enough play in there to completely set the caps free
driveshaft whipped into my muffler and extension housing cracked
but the slip yoke never pulled out
so the shaft is in perfect condition still

more than likely it's bent
i was just hoping for something else

Your rear output shaft is bent. Go with a Heavy duty slip yoke eliminator. Or If you don't have the money for that give me a call tomorrow. I might have a used shaft at the shop. He'll give me a call anyway I'll beat anyone's price on a tera slip yoke eliminator.

If your driveshaft flew off and smacked the exhaust more then likely it is damaged and will at least need to be checked for straightness and balance. This can cause vibes

The output shafts are notorious for bending. I've seen several bend. I have one here at the house that I'd take $50 for. Otherwise, going to an SYE with a stronger output shaft is the way to go. I got mine from www.afm4x4.com since they have the JB Conv. style with heavy output shaft for $259.

Well, just incase anyone was wondering...

new (to me) t-case with currie sye and cv shaft for $400CAN

seems like a pretty smokin deal to me
I wanted to just go with a new t-case to save me the hassle af opening it up and assessing the damage and putting it back together...
a really nice guy offered me this and i could not refuse

heh
so now i have a new t-case and SYE and DS
old has been pulled
now i just gotta get this one back in there
